I recently picked up some Lil'gun powder on a good buy at an auction. I primarily shoot hadnguns 357 through 454 and don't find a lot of listings for it in my reloading manuels. Anybody have good luck with this powder? I picked up some 2400 at the same auction but have been using that for a long time and have a lot of experience with it.

There has been several lots of Lil'Gun powder, and each had significant speed differences from the "designed" speed. Assume you have 2400 in ball powder form for an initial go with the L'G. Use the smallest case (caliber) on hand for this kind of testing. ... felix

I've played with a lb or two in the 480 Ruger, 44 Mag, and 357 Mag. Can't say I much care for it. I've always had much better success with WW 296/H110 for top end and 2400 when max speed is not mandatory. Lil Gun acted funny when I approached top end. Using a chrongraph, it worked up smoothly, then spiked with no warning. 296/H110 will level off in velocity even when another 1/4 or 1/2 grain is added. Primers are starting to flatten, but not too bad. This tells me that I just surpassed max load. In otherwords, I got some warning. Lil Gun didn't work that way. I have heard others having good luck with it in some 357 and 22 Hornet loads.

My biggest gripe with LilGun is how hot it gets the barrel compared to other powders.

It DOES need compression to be consistant though... and consistant it can be,so longas you keep it compressed.

16gr in a .357 under a 180 works right nice for me.

20 gr Lil'Gun under a 204 gr lyman gc shoots real well in my 357max handi-rifle.
Also not too shabby is 40 gr under a 400 sierra j-bullet in my 500S&W handi.
That one Kicks a bit though.

I like Lilgun and 170 to 200 gr bullets in my 357 mag Rifle. Works great!

In my pistol a few shots of the same with lilgun will really heat it up.

I'm a L'ilGun fan using it in .22 Hornet, .218 Bee, .357 Mag, .357 Max and .41 Mag. Works a treat, lot-to-lot, without compression (which I understand to be a bane of ball powders). I use standard pistol to magnum rifle primers as required (determined through load development).

I like Lil'Gun, and have used it in my .454's and .44 magnums. It is close in burn rate to H-110/WW296, but doesn't have the load density problems.

Tried mixing the Lil Gun powder with RD 265s last week and had good results from my Marlin 1894. Started at 19 grains and went to 21. The best grouping was with the 21 grains of powder, 5 shots at 75 yards in 2.5 inches. I size the boolits to .431 on an old RCBS Lube A matic using Lyman Ideal. The bore on this rifle slugs at .429. The rifle is topped with a Leupold VX2 1-4. Should be ready for deer season.

This forum has been great since I got back into casting. All the info you need to make good ammo and more comes in every day.

I had trouble with it in my .454 when it first was avaliable, then they had a recall. I had used it all up by then and don't know but it may have been the problem lot.

I knew it was only a matter of time.... I seriously doubt any loading manual will ever give a recommendation for a light load using a .38 wadcutter and Lil Gun powder.
