The Hornady manual , with the fellow wearing a cowboy hat , looking through binoculars, top right , was Hornady's first manual , printed in 1967 and only contained data for rifle cartridges !
This was my first manual and I still have it.....it was one of the few back then that had data for the 7.5 Schmidt Rubin 1896/11 rifles that flooded the market. $29.95 got you a rifle at the Army Navy Surplus store. My first rifle, and I still have it also !

Those Speer Wildcat manuals are getting hard to find now. I passed several up in the past but the next one I find at a decent price is going home with me. james

I didn't know that Hornady manual was their first. That's one of the ones I bought new.
I saw the Hodgdon with the pressure barrel and the Speer with the guy and kid for sale at a local gunshow yesterday.

Hi!
Do any of these reloading manuals show loading data for the German 9.3 X 72 Rimmed? This is not the more powerful 9.3 X 74R
Thanks!
Jim

I think these older manuals are a great resource to have, I am constantly using them to cross reference load data from newer manuals, there are a lot of differences in some of the data, I think the newer manuals are no where near the max limits on a good portion of the loads they list. I think lawyers have edited reloading manuals for at least the last 20 years

Sorta like first editions in literature or authors' semi-lost first books, the first manuals by a given company tend to bring relatively fat prices.

I have that oldest Hornady manual; autographed by JW Hornady, which I always thought was pretty cool. I regret not keeping my fathers' Speer #7 (?), as my more-modern Speer (#11 IIRC) manual had eliminated many good loads that were in the older manuals.

I also have a pretty wild PO Ackley manual from about the same time. Some of those loadings look pretty crazy to me these days - including 'how did he fit /that much/ powder in the case' ???

Better watch those old manuals. For example that first manual for Hornady in 1967 that has only rifle loads. I gave Hornady a call and asked them about some loads in there particularly the 308 loads. I said some of them seem very hot. He says "My God! Throw that manual away, no burn it!" I guessed right when I aske "Powder changed since then, huh?" He said yes that it did very much and many of the top loads are downright dangerous. They may be a good starting point using the beginning loads.

It's interesting too, to read the little right up on each cartridge. Since much time has passed many of them are really wrong and downright funny. One for example is the 32 Special. Some manuals say that it's in it's obsolescence and won't be around much longer. That was way back then. It's still around. Many of them are funny.

I really don't think that the old loads are that dangerous, there is not a history of handloaders blowing up guns, using this data.

I collect old reloading manuals, it a great resource for find data on old cartridges.

Back in the Good Old Days, an enthusiast could occasionally get someone to publish his own specialty loading manual, or do it himself. If he had a store that catered to the shooting sports, he could make up a minor-league version of the Ideal or B&M Handbook.

I believe R.F. Wells was the outfit that cast some of Herter's reloading presses. They also offered their own line of reloading equipment.

And of course, any Hot New Caliber du jour had its audience of enthusiasts.

This is a very cool thread and boy, I never would have believed:

1. That shooters actually own, collect and read reloading manuals.

2. That my stuff bought new from the 70's and 80's would make "ME" vintage :-)

So many shooters look for "recipes" on the web, and that may have its place, but the written word in these manuals have so much more than just powder measure details.

I'll have to take a pic of mine one day soon.
