Lead hardness testing

Anyone here have the ability to test muffin size ingots for hardness if I sent two different ingots to them? I have wheel weights and range lead poured into ingots but now can't remember which is which.

Get the pencils. They cost all of about $11 and you can test your own. If you don't know about the pencil method, do a search. I have the Lee tester and it'll never leave the shelf again except to be sold.

Couldn't you put the two in a vise with a ball bearing or marble between them and crank down on it. the one with the deeper impression is softer. Just spit balling. Don't a lot of the testers do some kind of impression and then compare to know harnesses.

drop them on concrete, the one with the duller thud is the range scrap, because it will be softer

Invest in a Cabin Tree lead hardness tester, you wont regret owning one. I don't use mine a ton, but I wouldn't be without it now that ive owned one awhile.

All you need is a ball bearing, a bathroom scale or a known weight. Use the ball to push an indent into the lead, then enter the weight used, the diameter of the ball and the diameter of the dent into a calculator and it gives you hardness. I have a 3/4" ball bearing for this, a bathroom scale for the weight and put it all in the arbor press. You could just stand on it and use your own weight too.
