Hi guys if you were to make a 338 wildcat cartridge for a win94 would it be a 33/30-30 or a 33/32-40

And why?

I'd pick the 33/30-30 mainly because the parent brass is everywhere and I might consider a 33/30-30ai.

What he said. Nobody makes 32-40 brass any more. You could form it out of Starline long 38-55 cases but a necked up 30-30 would be way easier to deal with.

I would take the easy way out and just buy a 338 marlin.

I am not impressed with it as a concept for a wildcat. The 35-30 can use bullets made for the 35 Remington. There are no 338 bullets that I know of that would work well off a 30-30 case. About the only ones would be the LE's made for the 338 Marlin and they would not be as good in the lower powdered 30-30 case. With cast bullets Pope liked the 33-40 and its use in single shots might be a good one or one could use cast. 35-30 is a better wildcat for the 30-30 however.

I can't argue with brass availability!

Surely as we are cast shooters bullet availability will always be of much less concern than brass.

338-08 (338 Federal) Rimmed - size-down and shorten 444 cases (Starline or Hornady), open up cartridge guides to feed, standard dies and reamers. Set headspace so 338 Federal chamber too deep to fire (like 270 Win in 280 Rem) +.060 over Go gauge or too short to chamber -.020 from Go gauge factory 338 Federal, NOE, Mountain molds, Accurate molds have or can make your molds. Your can clip and file the points off jacketed for your tube feed. Long ago - 270 Savage in Marlin 336 (before 7-30, 7-08) I clipped points and filed flat for tube magazine.

exactly, 35/30 makes more sense, and dies are not too expensive.

Lets consider the pressures involved.
Winchester decided the 444, 375 Winchester and the others needed the beefed up Big Bore action for the safety factor. So is dropping a 338/08 rimmed a wise step ? Average loaded 375 Winchester ammo would survive in a standard 94 action but what if somehow average pressure was surpassed by a smear of dirt in the throat. Thread diameter / chamber walls of Big Bore barrels are larger for a very good reason.

The 338 /30-30 is a fine round that gives a good increase of punch down range. If that is not enough step up to a 38-55. But to take the standard 94 action into pressure borderlines is just not worth what can happen. And it does happen with just 30-30's in the standard 94 action.

There is no specification or requirement that any NON-STANDARD cartridge be loaded to any specific pressure. Judicious loading procedures control safety, not the pressures of related cartridges - 375 Win vs 38-55. Preventing the casual use of standard factory cartridges is a concern. There can be an issue with bolt thrust on a case with a larger diameter head - this is where your loading procedures are involved. A larger case will provide lower pressure when velocity, bullet weight, diameter are equal provided proper reloading procedures are followed.

I'm a fan of .338's so I would go with this or your .338/30-30 and a 200 gr cast gc bullet. Bigger is not always better and .358 isn't better than .338. :roll:

Actually I would not recommend Reeder he is just glorified gun modifier that does little r none of his work and he is just recycling stock guns with a little work done that can be done better on local level by most gun smiths.

338 Marlin is an excellent idea and cartridge for reasonable cost.
