if it is smokless and cowboy action, it might be trailboss. pop one open and see if the powder is stick, flake, ball or donut. if donut, it's trailboss*, *I don't know of anyone else making a bulky donut powder.

What ever it is sure is cleaner burning than the powders us mortals can buy. If I had to guess I would say Clays or Universal, both have been pretty clean burners in my 45s. Pretty hard to beat Unique on accuracy and availability.

Vhitavouri has Tin Star, another cowboy powder, i don't know if it's donut or not. Im pretty sure someone else besides Trai Boss had a powder like that, perhaps Vectan / NobelSport.

I have never seen (Donut powder) before. How does it meter or trickle with that shape or size? Or is that pic really magnified?

So can you use a powder drop? Or is it a powder you measure manually? Not for use on a progressive press? Since this is the first time I have seen or heard of it. Is this a powder you use only for Cowboy shooting? What other uses?
Sorry for all the questions. Learning curve.

Back in the early to mid-1990's I bought some 44-40's and Black Hills ammunition to try CAS shooting. The bullets were 0.427" and VERY soft. The did not work at all in the Rugers because of the bad dimensions of the Rugers. They also did not work in the Marlin with micro-groove rifling (this was before they re-adopted Ballard rifling). The worst leading I ever got was in this rifle with the Black Hills ammunition. Again, not the ammunitions fault since the barrel in the Marlin was way oversized. The ammunition worked perfectly in my Rossi 92 replica with standard rifling.

The ammunition was unusually clean shooting. I ran into a Black Hills salesman at a gunshow a while after that and I asked what powder they were using. He told me W-231. I tried some, but it was not nearly as clean as the factory loads. I suspect that it was because the lube is different. Anyway, I gave up on the 44-40's and moved on to 38-40's. I have had no problems of any kind with the 38-40's for about 20 years. I use SPG lube and Trail Boss in the 38-40's.

Glad you said that was Trail Boss, with the silvery reflection it looks like a bowl of cheerios floating in milk.

a few years ago I tested some different brands of cowboy factory ammunition for accuracy & velocity. Among the brands was Black Hills.

in the 45 Colt the charge was 8 grs of a disc type powder that I did not recognize .It produced 1127 fps in a 24" barrel.

In the 44-40, the charge weight was 7.5 grs of what appeared to be the same powder type it produced1159 fps in a 24" barrel..

I kept a sample of the powder and just looked at it. The discs are small in diameter and appear to be similar in size to SR7625. That is not to say that it is SR7625.
