First time poster, this is a great place for info. I picked up a New Henry 45 at the local gun show, used, and have been feeding it ammo I have loaded for my Rugers. It likes the RCBS 300 GC with 17g 2400 best so far, keeping all of the shots on a 5 gallon bucket lid off hand at 100 yards which in Southern Indiana brush and woods is about the longest you get hunting. Anybody else have any good luck with these rifles?

thanks,

Leadeye

Leadeye,
I have a Uberty 1866 yellowboy 45colt. Same action as the Henry. If yours is a copy of an original toggle link action you have to stay with the 14,000psi loads or you WILL damage it. It will elongate the rear frame link pivot hole first if you are lucky, spread the frame if you are not. If you have a Big Boy Henry you will be fine with a bit hotter loads.
I have about 2700 rounds thru mine and it shoots great. It is one of my most fun guns to shoot. I shoot white and blackpowder and 230-300gr cast out of it and love it. You just have to stay under that 14,000 mark. Iron or cast frame, the differance in what they will handle is so close it is not the issue. It is the toggle links. Your load might be a bit stiff. I would check to be on the safe side.
Both are fun to shoot, Have fun!!

henrys are also made in 44 mag so im sure it will take a fairly stout 45 colt load

If that load is too hot you might want to try 9.2 grains power pistol.I've been using that load as my practice load with my 305 grain boolit with good results. It works great with the 270 grain rcbs boolit also but not as accurate. My 305PB boolit is a bore rider designed for leverguns and does 1200 fps with Rem 2 1/2 primers and shoots one inch groups at 50 yards consistantly in my Marlin 45 colt.It will shoot ragged hole groups with RL-7 but uses almost 3 times as much powder for an extra 100 fps.

I have the NHR Big Boy version of the Henry so it sounds like the tougher of the two types mentioned. It points well and feels good to shoot for me, I think most of that is due to the heavy barrel. I have a Marlin 1894 44 mag that I have had for 24 years that I like as well but it feels lighter. I recently purchased a Ranch Dog 265 grain mold for this and cast some boolits for test on my next trip south.
