I read around here somewhere of using HVAC tape for beagling , as it has a higher temp rating ..

I have been looking around at Orange and Blue ( have to be careful around the tool depts ) , and the HVAC tape they have is only rated to 200 F ..

Is this what you are using or is there another tape I am missing ?

I'm using regular AC aluminum duct tape made by Royal Tape. I have no idea about the temp ratings. As long as the adhesive sticks and holds the tape in place it will be fine. Mine melts during casting and you can move the tape strips around but it stays attached. Give it a try. If it don't work, you can always clean and start over with different tape.

If you send me a PM with your snail mail addy, I'll send you a piece of what I have./beagle

Since I couldn't find the type of tape beagle recommended (I live in a small town) I decided to try something a little different and it worked. I wiped a thin film of Silicone blue on the mould blocks where I wanted the shims then layed regular aluminum foil on the silicone. 2 layers did just fine.

its a method to spread the mould halves slightly, results in larger diameter but slighly out of round boolits. used when moulds cast to small.

kjg, it is a process deified after our own beagle (who posted above) who developed it. It's nothing more than sticky back aluminium tape applied in strips to a mould block to hold it open while casting. Quite ingenious to say the least. Beagle developed the process using the tape he described. Since, as I was encouraged by [I think] Calamity Jake, I have gone to using Ace brand flue tape rated for 600dF, it does not slide around or leak glue. A mould that is skosh can be sometimes be made to size up enough to be useful, i.e., dropping @ .309 and after beagling dropping @ .312.

There is a link in the stickies on Beagling. It's at the bottom of the page on the link I'm posting. Thanks to Beagle.

Yap, Sundog I think I did turn you on to that tape.
I have used it to beagle a 7MM .285 mould to get .290 for a WOREOUT(.279X.287) 7MM mauser.
I get some small finns but they scrap off easy and a I have to flair the GC's

Link to Beagle's original article on CastPics: http://www.castpics.net/memberarticles/Bullet%20Diameter%20Enlargement.htm

This stuff:

3M™ High-Temperature Flue Tape, 1.5 in x 15 ft, 2113NA

http://images.builderssquare.com/Detail/0/4/534/4534845_Detail.jpg

3M™ High-Temperature Flue Tape is easily installed around seams in hot air ducts. It stops hot air leaks and may be used on surfaces up to 600 degrees F (315 C).

About $10 a box.

Anyone know a Canadian source? I have some duct tape but would like to try the flue tape.

Cheers

As the advertisment says ACE IS THE PLACE!

BTW- one roll will last you several lifetimes and believe it or not this stuff works great on furnace ducting!

Does the out of roundness have a negative effect on accuracy? Can you shoot bullets so cast unsized? The reason I ask is my 24-3 has three chamber mouths that will accept a .433 pin gauge. I have not done any serious accuracy tests yet, but I'm just thinking ahead!

Can this be done on the Lee six cavity molds?

Yup. Sure can.

one of my shooting buddy's is a machinist brought a box of shim stock to the bench

I use it on the lyman 311644 mold

I cut a .25'' wide strip and wrap it around 1 side of the top of the mold block

this way I can adjust it larger or smaller

right now I am running .004

this is the only way I get round boolets

I think that "out of roundness" tends to disappear when you shove that bullet down a round barrel with 20,000+ psi. behind it.

Patrick L,

I, too, have a 3" Lew Horton Model 24 and a 6 1/2" 624. They both have .432" cylinder throats, and were leading within 20 rounds. I lapped and beagled a Lyman 429421 to drop right at .434 and enlarged a lube/sizer die to .433. The leading problem is now a thing of the past.

With a soft alloy, out or roundness is not a worry.

Hullo, I would try the hardware stores and if not there, try a store that sells wood stoves , they should have it for their stove pipe that they sell.
Good Luck

Nope, any Beagled out of roundness doesn't effect accuracy as it is symetrical, asymetrical out of roundness would.

Boolits don't have to be round in cross section to be accurate.

The original boolit for the Whitworth rifle for example, accurate at 1,000 yrds plus, was hexagonal to give a mechanical fit to the hexagonal bore.

So shooting unsized shouldn't be a problem.

I took the specs from my last enhancement via Beagleing:
311291 Before 182gr .309
After 185gr .311 to .313..
Yeah their out of round,. Shoot beautiful in my Nagant's and P14
If your having trouble finding a boolit in the right weight or diameter in your stash , consider trying it. I make some of my .25 moulds shoot great in 6.5 guns.
