Hi guys, my smith has a 358w reamer. I want him to rebarrel me a 356w, can the 358w reamer be used to cut a 356w chamber. I figure from drawings the case is the same so yes, but, the throating may be different from one to the other. From what I have seen the 358w looks like it is throated for bigger bullets than the 356w, can anyone confirm or deny this, or better still give me details?

Thanks

The 358W reamer will work just fine. Both the .358W and .356W shoot the same diameter bullets. A .358 groove diameter barrel with a 16" twist would be perfect, especially for cast bullet use.

Same reloading dies also.

But--a .358 reamer won't cut the .356's rim, will it?

No it won't. However, depending on the action type it may or may not be necessary. If so the rim recess can easily be done using a lathe. The bolt face/extractor/ejector also may or may not have to be altered depending on the action used.

Its a win 94 so the rim is already cut in the bolt!?

Oh--o.k. You didn't say that in your original post. You can always double check on such things by going to a reamer mfg.'s website and checking the inventory numbers against each other to see if they're the same.

Shouldn't have to alter anything other than the rechamber. What year is your M94 made and what barrel length? I've considered the same rechamber but using a .308W reamer to make a 307W with my own very late production M94AE Black Shadow with 24" barrel.

Is the standard action ok for the .356? Or would you need the fatback Big Bore action?
Best, Thomas?

I dont know if Larry's is a beefed up blackshadow or a 30-30! The blackshadow was made in 444.

My action is a bigbore formerly a 375w but with cast a 375 and a 38-55 is pretty much a wash, the 356 is something different.

My bb was made in 81 with a 20" barrel. It will be done in 24" i think.

I believe you're good to go then. Sounds like a winner.
