I am looking to rebarrel a Swedish Mauser with a new barrel. I see that Brownells offers a short chambered barrel for a 98 Mauser. Will this one fit a 96 Swedish Mauser action?

Someone can correct me if i am wrong. The M-96 would be a small ring Mauser. The 98 would be a large ring Mauser.

They should also have barrels for a small ring Mauser. If not, try Midway. They do.

What are you wanting to re-barrel to?

Midway and Brownells Small Ring barrels are offered in calibers that are Safe in the Small Ring action.
Lucky for you the 6.5x55 is one that they at least do or did offer.
But I use to have to order a Large Ring barrel for the Small Ring thread Turkish Mausers when I would rebarrel them.
Since I left my Lathe in California 20 + years ago I just pay a gunsmith to turn down the shank and rethread it for the Small ring thread.
I still have a 25-06 I built that way.
Most Swedes can take the pressures of the .308 if in good condition, but it is beyond industry standards, so the suppliers do not offer them in short chambered replacements.
But barrels are only available in Sporter Contour configurations that I have been able to find.

I'm sticking with the 6.5x55...I love that round! Midway did offer one but it was discontinued. I have noticed Midway has discontinued a lot of stuff

Try going right to Adams and Bennett site.
Low cost barrels, but shoot just fine, and in my opinion, very accurate for the money.

Can I ask why you want to rebarrel? Is your barrel worn out? I only ask this because all the Swedes I've owned were amazingly accurate. Sarco could have an original Swedish replacement.
Best, Thomas.

The rifle was already shortened "sporterized" so I'm not worried about devaluing the piece. The current barrel has a dark bore with moderate pitting but decent rifling. Accuracy has always been MODA (minute of deer's #%@)...on paper but nothing to write home about.

So I envision a sleek tapered sporter barrel, nice walnut stock with skeleton butt plate, turned down bolt handle and nice scope.

When looking for barrels, don't forget E.R. Shaw also. Threaded, short chambered, just about any way you want it! And contours to fit any stock profile.

This. I've heard A&B barrels are made by Shaw but not confirmed. ER Shaw makes great barrels.
Good luck on your project. The Swede action is a great foundation.
Best,Thomas.

ER Shaw makes excellent barrels and has a very long list of available calibers. There are small ring Mauser 98's. Small ring - .980 x 12 tpi, large ring - 1.110 x 12 tpi, both are 55* Whitworth thread.
