I know PO Ackley created the .22 Eargesplitten Loudenboomer in the 1960s just to see how fast he could push a bullet. If I remember correctly, the parent case was a 375 H&H necked down to 224. I think these types of "cartridges" are really neat. Not really to shoot, but just to have an inert cartridge of something that looks really odd.

Does anyone know of a way to make this (or similarly odd) cartridge with typical reloading dies? My father-in-law is looking into purchasing a 50 BMG and I would love to neck down a 50 BMG to 224 to give him. Like a gag gift or a curiosity piece.

It is said you need to clean it every 2.4 round for top accuracy and barrel life is less than 30 rounds.
It didn't catch on for some reason.

I'm sure these cartridges were about the most efficient way to burn out a barrel. But I would still like to make an inert cartridge or two just to put on my shelf.

I remember decades ago, someone had a pic of a 50 bmg necked down to 17 cal. Right off hand I cannot think of a quick and easy way to neck one down to 22 cal. You would have to probably have made a series of bushings made to progressively neck it down, and a die to hold the bushings, like competition dies. Would be easy once you have the bushings/die made, but wouldn't be cheap.

Just for info, it was the .378 Weatherby necked down. Looks like a ton of work to even make a sample.

I rolled a 20mm case neck down to 22 cal once in the lathe. Just for grins and giggles. Used a knurling tool with smooth rollers and a pin in the tail stock to help support it. Was a lot of work as I had to roll the neck down then set up and blend in the shoulder. Making the bushings would have been easier

You could always try the .2240 Triple Necked Terror

I going to dig out the other Ackley book I have one found but not the other. I see if he explains the neck sizing down. LOL love it !!
