Hi,
Just a thought. I was looking at at 577 2 3/4 " NE. It just looks like it would be a perfect cartridge for a lever action, rimmed, tapered, etc.

A 45/70 is 2.5 inches long
a 577 2 3/4 is 3 -1/4 23 % increase

a 45/70 has a base diameter of about 0.6 inches
a 577 has a base Diameter of about 0.75 roughly a 20% increase.

max pressure on the 577 is 39,000 psi less than 450 marlin
Of course bolt thrust would be much greater with the bigger case base.

Now for the mechanically inclined here. In a world of CNC machinery and very smart people would it be possible to scale up a malin 336 type action 25 % and chamber it in the big 2-3/4 inch N.E. cartridges? if possible how $$$$$$[smilie=1:????

So you are looking for a heart attack? Anything's possible, but a one off copy of virtually any levergun scaled up 25% would cost a fortune. They did chamber big 50 cal. ctgs in the 1886 winchester I believe.

It's hard to say as far as cost, but I'm guessing BIG bucks. Your 25% figure looks reasonable as far as pressure is concerned though. It would be a big sucker, but you wouldn't have to worry about running into another at the range.

Well it was a silly thought. An entry level double rifle starts at 10,000. I was just thinking about the action. But now that wiser people have looked at the idea I realize every single part would have to be made. There would be no commonality of parts to other rifles and no off the shelf parts except maybe springs, barrel and screws.

If it could be done though, WOW what a hoot!

Too bad I don't have any use for a double rifle, or I'd start making them! I've got an idea for barrels that adjust to obviate "regulating". What would you think about a double rifle with two octagonal barrels? There have been a lot of double rifles made out of double shotguns with barrel liners too. Put almost whatever you want into the chambers, so long as thrust doesn't go too high. A standing breech really cuts down on strength requirements too. Most of the strength is required to keep the bolt stationary in a bolt action (as contrasted with sticking out of one's face).

A 45-70 case is 2.1" long

I just measured a loaded round. What is the longest COL that the marlin 45/70 will handling.

the 86 or 71 may do it, the 71 does the 348 which has the larger bolt face already.
and is plenty strong for the weaker cartridge you are looking at. it is the length that is the issue.

..............A bolt action would be much easier and less costly to make. Think about how much fun a .577 Snider semi -auto would be :-). After about 4 rounds you'd be in a cloud of smoke so thick you couldn't see your own feet.

It could perhaps be built on the old 1887 Winchester lever action shotgun!

That is a thought.
