My wife bought this old GEW 98 for me after she saw how my eyes lit up when I spotted her on the used rack! 1916 dated, the Nazi coin in the stock makes me think WW2 bring back? The Marbles compass in the stock works if you take the bolt out, the mother of pearl inlays, the milled bolt handle the Lyman muzzle brake and the redfield front sight all say this was someone's special girl! 8mm and all numbers match and there is a wide smooth sweet after market trigger in it that I haven't placed the maker but it's a keeper! So Boys;Helga. Helga meet the boys!

Looks like a fun toy for sure. 8mm Mauser is a good caliber too.

Sorry about the upside down pics I don't know how to fix them! Love that forearm tip and yes she shoot cast like a dream! The stock was in rough shape when she came to me, I hope I did justice on the refinishing the old weaver mounts and sling were part of the deal and I added the weaver scope cause there was no rear sight ! Well boys what do you think of Helga? I sure do love my wife; she said she hadn't seen me look at something like that since I found our current dog! She put it in layaway, I went back a few days later and it was gone; and the boys at my local LGS didn't ruin her surprise but just before my birthday I found a layaway recite in the farm truck sun visor and I'll tell you it was hard to wait and not give it away until my birthday! Sure wish I knew this rifles story, probably saw action in both world wars! And no telling how many hints on both sides of the pond!

They sure had attention to detail. Good looking rifle, and it sounds like you've got a good wife too

You're lucky to have a good woman to get that for you. You have much to be thankful for.

I love Helga. I love your wife. She sounds a lot like mine. Divorce that muzzle brake.
This from a man with a Cutts Compensator on his old Browning A5 haha.
Best, Thomas.

ok I like the rifle, I don't understand why you have to take the bolt out for the compass to work.... wouldn't you just need to turn the rifle sideways???

God Bless, and One Love.

Just how it is GoodolBoy don't know why, compass gives very accurate directional readings if the bold it out, otherwise it's off by about 1/2 a rotation

Weird! My father bought me an 8mm Chech. mauser from one of my uncles in the'60's that looked a lot like that. It had a sporterized stock, diamond inlays in the stock just like that, no scope, no compass though. I sold it in the'90's because I was told you couldn't scope it and I didn't like the fine iron sights, you couldn't see'em in the woods. In those days, for me, all useful guns were for hunting. When we later change, we are still affected by past mistakes.

Herter's 1966 catalog #76 calls this " Herter's Target-Type Recoil Eliminator" with all the usual Herter's hyperbole. Price for part alone was $3.50 and $6.00 if they installed it.

I seem to remember a photo of a small boy holding a Garand so equipped in the catalog "8 yr old boy fires full power 30-06 with no ill effects whatsoever"- my catalogs were early 70s though.
On the compass; check your bolt for magnetism by passing it over a needle or pin.
Best,Thomas.

So rejuvenating this thread because Helga will be Elk hunting in CO in Oct of 2020! A cast boolit pcd and gcd will be in the pipe. She is not a trim light weight girl but I guess I’ll carry her up the mountain anyhow for the first day at least!

I’ve been impressed with how she shoots and she’s just so classy that she deserves to go someplace special!

I guess it shows my age, but I can fawn over a fine shooting iron like that, but have little interest in the latest whizzy bang out of modern factory/shop.

AND that is not meant to denigrate the custom shop whizzy bang.

So loaded up cast boolits in 185-1895 range and some Sierra 175 game Kings try to make the range soon but Saturday is supposed to be -5 F so I might just think about shooting

Has anyone played with the Hornady flex tip bullets; I see in 321 they have a 165.Long ago I tried Rem 170gr .321" CoreLokt RN in my ER Shaw 8x57. They grouped about 3" for three shots while correct .323" bullets would do half that.
