Hi everyone,
i was wondering if you could tell me what the best lubricant to use for forming wildcat brass.
my parent case is a norma .45basic and will be formed into a case with tapered walls, a throat for a .429 bullet(½" long) total length of case 2,755"
this is my first wildcat, i had the reamer made by PTG and the dies were made by Hornady.

cheers
Roger

I have used both lanolin and imperial sizing die wax for many years with excellent results. Lanolin is the old stand by from years ago. Keep in mind a little bit on the cases goes a long ways. To much and dings or collapses happen.

Be sure to anneal the brass and smooth over any sharp corners in the dies. My latest 'wonder' lube for forming has been the cheap spray-on furniture polish from the grocery store. I also found that if you get 'too much' resistance when forming you can back out the case, re-lube it, rotate it 90 degrees and try again. There seems to be a lot of black magic in forming brass.

I just reformed a bunch of Lapua 423 Dakota brass to 300 Norma improved. Numerous steps and multiple anneals. Also had to neck turn. Lost 13 cases before I really go it figured out. Collapsed shoulders from neck telescoping into the case.

Sounds like you could size down in the one die of necessary.

Howdy !

Whatever lube you use, please use w/ caution. Excess lube can lead to case dents.

Wouldn't it been easier to trim first then foam the case? I've done only a few case reforming 300 blackout and 40/65 and made the cases with a file and trim die.
Formed the basic case cut off exceed brass file, deburred then run case thru regular size die.

Doc, If I cut First..I leave em a bit long, get them formed, then trim after Fireform.
I dislike "short" ctgs.
On that 300 BO or whatever the other designation is..
I formed from 221 Fireball...the Original!! Very easy!!!
But..221 FB cost what 300BO cost for Brass...
I have Made Numerous Wildcats without "form" dies...but, From my [limited] experience with it...This one [300BO] is a Bit Tough!!!

Edit; Sitting here thinking if I had a Contender [or other single shot] in 300 I would Simply Fireform...Gonna try that...One Day!!!

Had a T/C in 7 TCU ages ago I just fired 223 ammo and viola TCU brass. On the 300 blackout I used a sawsall to cut off the excess brass from the 223 brass.
Most of the 223 brass I used was surplus military brass that is left in abundance at my range.

I did/and do my 7TCU like that still.
Do you think the AR platform is OK for Fireforming with COW and a wax plug??

Damn!!!
Hi-Jack alert!!!!
We can continue this elsewhere....

I have always just used the RCBS sizing lube , Does the Lanolin work better , I have never tried anything else....I dont do a lot of case forming but on occasion I do when I dont have any brass for a gun I want to try out .

Imperial Size die Lube...
I have gave everything else a Serious try...
Only Imperial on my Bench.
Oh...for regular sizing operations...any of the store bought sprays or homemade concoctions is fine...Easy too...Heck "pledge" is OK...

I dented some 223 with to much lube going to 7mm tcu, I think I'll try just fire forming next time.

Absolutely!! There is no reason to FL size new brass anyway..I have Yet to touch the Shoulder of any of my 7tcu brass with a sizing die...
Maybe my loads are too light......

What he said, I have pulled cases back out and lubed/turned numerous time before I got them all the way in to the die. 300 Weatherby to 300 H&H takes a bunch of small moves. I suspect that if I tried it all in one shot the die would go back to RCBS to have the case removed because I doubt I could have gotten it back out.

For inside a case mouth I've used powdered graphite, that works.

For heavy case forming (243 from 308 or 45 ACP Shotshells) I used to use a moly disulphide lube, I wish I remembered the brand name (2/3 gal or so can size, white iirc with green type?) It was stolen just too long ago. Family members . . .

Lanolin WORKS too; Heard of all kinds of other lubes too; Try one out & you may just like it :)

When making my .416 Taylor brass from Hornady 45 mag basic brass I use both Imperial ( now Redding) lightly on the outside of the case mouth AFTER first dipping the case mouth in motor mica or extra fine ground graphite for inside lubrication.Robert
