has anyone had this done, I am looking to shoot low velocity 7.62x54 bullets, and the only lee moulds available are for gc. I see saeco has some without gc for sale but they are mucho dinero, plus the handles to boot.

have you tried them un checked? This CAN work ,depending on the velocity.

I didn't pay anyone to do it, I did it myself :

Here are the results from a 200 gr. Lee .30 cal. mold that I removed the g/c on.

7.0 grs. Bullseye with the plain base 200 gr. RN bullet.

5 Shots at 50 yards from a 308 Win., with metallic sights :

Ben, those look like good paper patch candidates. I like.
sized .308 and wrapped, might be sweet shooters.
I easily use the lowest charge on the Lee Sheet with my dies. Over that, and accuracy suffers. I use 4895.
You did a good job drilling out, they look square.
Nice organized box of castings. You have done this before.

I get real good results with my plain based bullets. Of course I keep the speed down , if you push them too fast it is all a waste of good alloy, time, and propellant.

about 1400 with g/c boolits w/o g/c's is reasonable.
p.b. boolits run to 16-1700 easily enough

I have occasionally run boolits without the gas checks crimped on them no problem, as has already been mentioned just keep the velocity down, which is what you want anyway.

I have also run gas check boolits backwards for a rifle wad cutter load no problem.

I did the same thing with a sharp pen knife and a Dremmel. It was a Lee mold so it was easy to "carve" away the block. It was a 2 cav, so I left one with a check. They come out nice. I had to do a lot of polishing and I would cast a few then polish, cast a few then polish. It did turn out though. It can be done. Ben's look really nice!!!! This is a 160 gr. Lee .309 mold. Shoots great out of my FR8! The dingy look is the Alox BTW. http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm243/Evansguns/102_1712.jpghttp://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm243/Evansguns/102_1710.jpg
