I too, have been wondering about this. I would like to cast belt buckles sometime.

I made a bunch of brass muffins last summer. I simply scooped the crud of the top. I machined a few into gears and other small parts with one of them.

My dad set up a forge when I was a kid, and we melted down brass cartridge cases we found and cast trigger guards for muzzle loader rifles. We fluxed the pot with borax. It was a lot of fun making the plaster two part molds and seeing an actual useable part come out.

A friend of mines grandson wanted to melt some aluminum cans and we found this would work and was fairly cheap to build and use. He had fun with it and got his curiosity fix too. We made him load the cans in first to avoid getting liquid in the melt. Hardest thing to find was the old fire extinguisher to use as the crucible.

What plaster did you use? I need a trigger guard for my 12 gauge H&R..
