i just purchased a lee 312-160 mold for my 3006 i plan to use these for 100 yard max loads and moreso 50 yard loads. i wont be using gas checks, just sizing to 311

i started to wonder if anyone else had useful tips or trips for loading plinking loads?

i plan to use 12-14 grains of unique for these loads.once my last lb of unique disappears, ill move on to something else if need be.

I use the very similar Heavy Metal bullet with 8.4 grains of Bullseye in the .30-'06, air-cooled wheelweight metal, no gascheck, tumbled in Lee Liquid Alox. Velocity is about 1250 fps. A charge of 8.5 grains of WST also works well.

Typical targets shot from my .30-'06 Mauser sporter with 4x32mm Zeiss hunting scope. When scope is zeroed with 180-grain Federal Premium Noslers at 250 yards to strike at the crosshairs, the lower post of the duplex provides nearly correct holdover for the Bullseye small game load at 100 yards and is about 2-1/2" high at 50 yards, so I can take a 6:00 hold on a rabbit. Note that nose is slightly en graved upon chambering. Target below is 60 CONTINUOUS rounds WITHOUT cleaning, NO leading. Note the 20 shot group!

Too warm with that much unique without a gas Check I'm afraid 8-10 gr would be a better range. My go to load for the 06 with the 155 Lee without a check was 5-7 gr of bullseye used that load at 200 yd as my offhand practice load on a 12" gong . Other powders in that similar burn speed should do well also

Me I like 4-5 grains of Red Dot for .30 caliber. You want it faster go lighter bullet. Want it slower try bigger. Infinitely adjustable.

Go over 5 much and your pushing that 1400 fps and need a gas check.

Lots of options, find one that works for you and have some fun.

7 grains of any fast powder in 06. Watch out for shoulder set back. You might want to consider enlarging flash holes if you are going to shot a lot of these and have designated plinking load brass.

Trailboss has proven to be a great plinking load powder in my 30-30 and 270. It's the only powder that I have found to give less than 1" groups out of one particular 270. This was with 100 gr Hornady SP. The 30-30 I used Oregon Trail Laser-Cast 170 gr GC RNFP without a gas check. I would really consider the Trailboss powder for this due to the full case volume and accuracy that it brings. You simply cannot over pressure a round with this powder and despite being sold in 9 ounce cans, it's still very economical.

One word of caution, low velocity equals extremely deep penetration. As always, practice carefully and know what's beyond your target.
