View Full Version : What is your favorite thing to shoot at the range?

When I go to the range to shoot I like to hone my skills, but, after shooting targets I get a little bored. I like to shoot the steel targets, too. I find the diversion is helpful. What do you like to shoot at?

I go to the dollar store and get the packs of kids sidewalk chalk. The sticks are about an inch in diameter and four inches long. I break them in half and set them up as targets. They make such pretty colored poofs when hit.

Cutting 2x4's in half is fun. Bowling pins can be a lot of fun also. both done with handguns.

Golf balls are fun with 22RF or 22 center fire with cast. Set at 65 yards on my range when hit dead center they really take off. I will find them later with the mower.

My favorites are gallon milk jugs full of water. They leave no doubt about hits. In winter I add a little bit of kool aid or food color then freeze them outside. That way you will see them against the snow. The frozen block jug will take many hits from a 30-06.

Well I shoot USPSA, 3-Gun, and some IDPA. I really, really enjoy USPSA and 3-Gun and the IDPA is just additional trigger time. We obviously shoot lots of paper targets but the arrays of various steel is the most fun. Really like the authoritative ring when a round smacks steel! Some are a real challenge to hit fast and accurately like spinners, Texas stars, polish plate racks, etc.

Not for competition but at the home range, the .22 sensitive tannerite, couple table spoons worth dropped into aluminum foil and squeezed into a tight ball is a lot of fun! The .22 stuff is much more powerful and makes a tremendous boom with small amounts which gives you more bangs for your buck. As a plus the aluminum foil is somewhat combusted in the detonation and can produce a very bright flash! Give it a try!

I like to shoot empty shotgun shells with 22rf. Either put them on tree limbs, or the tops of tall weed stalks, Or, shoot them on the ground. Because they balance off center, there is no telling where they might go when hit on the ground.

I also like the traditional tin can. And sometimes, wood blocks or cubes 1.5x1.5

we play the little kid games.
battleship, or the race car game, etc.
if you have 2-4 people it adds a lot of fun, and the BS talking increases by 500%.
you can buy the targets at many gun stores and maybe walmart or midway.
they are good for training kids too because it places the focus on one shot one target.

Years ago I use to shoot in bowling pin matches , and won a few with a mod 29 smith, went in one of our LGS a couple of weeks ago and they had a chit load of pins , so I had to but a big box of them so now im in to that again , going to try and organize a match or two here this spring and see if we can get that going again. It was a lot of fun back in the day.

Growing up I killed a lot of beer bottles. First you get to drink em, then you get to shoot em.

A dozen bottles and a few rounds of .22lr will make even the worst day better.

Nowdays I accept that killing bottles is messy. Better to recycle them and shoot some paper or steel.

Two days ago I hung a coin the size and shape of one of our nickels on my airgun target.
One shot broke the string and turned that thing from flat to cone shape. And that was an airgun.

Made a wonderful ringing tinging sound as it bounced around my bullet catch.

Might have to do that again.

When I am shooting out on the farm I like 4 inch long pieces of 2X4 lumber. 4x4x4 is good also.

The pieces jump around well on the ground and when they break up make good smaller targets. When tossed into a stock tank they can be blown up into the air and all the pieces float making secondary targets. The wood is biodegradable. If you want to pick it up you can toss it into a fire leaving no mess.

WE have made a board to hold the neco candy wafers they make a great target for kids and adults both. A 1X4 X 8-12" long with 2 rows of holes drilled just deeper than the thickness of the wafers and the same dia for a slip fit works well. Turn to dust when hit. Asprin tablets are the same only a more demanding target. A pice of paper with a little honey or mollassas and shoot the flies that it attracks. Golf balls can be a lot of fun chasing them around the yard.

There is a place for shooting paper targets to hone your shooting skills ! a reaction type target is # 1 for fun !

When I go to the range I usually start out shooting at least 50 rounds of 22 lr with precision then move up to the big bores with 25 rounds of precision and then I shoot fast with precision with handguns , hardly shoot rifles but my favorite is a Marlin LA in 357 mag with a aimpoint shooting off hand.

In the cooler months in PA I shoot 50" indoor pistol bullseye and in the warmer months I shoot outdoor handgun speed steel plates almost every Tuesday throught the year, not counting my almost every sunday shooting sessions with my shootn bud , indoor or outdoor.

About 1/10 gr Bullseye, under a case full of ground walnut shell, with a toilet paper wad pressed in to hold it all together. Red dot on the wasps at about 4', squeeze and no more wasps nest, just mush and bits of nest settling to the ground.

I have cleaned lots of nests from my soffits, and from under the gunnels of my boat that way :-)

Around here we have Bald faced hornets, i have seen nests easily the size of a basketball, the perfect medicine for these is a 2-3/4" 12 Gauge 1-1/8 Oz of no 8 or 9 Shot about 15-20 yards away. When these things sting it feels sorta like being lit on fire, especially in the fall before the first freeze when they are at their 'Hottest' you can actually feel them hit ya. This method would be rough on soffits and boat gunnels :D

We have used the pumpkins, gallon jugs of water( gonna try the frozen ones, that sounds fun), silhouette, zombies ( these are the favorite of our grandsons), and of course sight in targets. I want to try the exploding targets, golf balls and now the sidewalk chalk. We bought our grandsons each a Cricket single shot .22 lr and mounted a scope on each. The oldest GS at 8 likes the pumpkins, had 5 set out once, only one with a stem. I gave him basic training on using the scope, he took his rifle and in 5 shots chewed the stem off the pumpkin at about 25 yards and didn't miss a shot. He was about 5 years old then. Blew my mind, he is still dead on with his rifle. :Fire:

Been using a lot of paper lately. We bought one of those black only laser printers that uses toner not ink. Fast, there are many many targets out there to be downloaded and printed.

Easiest is the airguns in the basement, which brings me to another favorite.

Spoons. I took 4 spoons, cheap 2nd hand store teaspoons, stainless mostly.
Wrapped the handle around a drill bit for a mandril, cut off the excess. Threaded them onto a 1/4 inch shaft with pipe spacers and hung them in my air rifle bullet catch box. A repurposed and redesigned 2 drawer file cabinet.

Back of the spoons facing me, each one got some nice bright yellow, red, blue dots for aiming points out of finger nail polish. Hit one and it goe Clink whizzzzzzzzzzzzzz as it spins around 4-6 times.

Another favorite is simply a steel top off an electrical 4x4 junction box hung on a wire with another colorful target of fingernail polish painted in center. WhangClang she goes when hit.

Just makes you feel good.

But 5 in one ragged hole in paper works too.

After I work up a good load and set the sights I shoot steel plates almost exclusively. I have acquired a few AR500 plates over the years and just love the "ping." As a Christmas present I got a set of target holders that use just a regular 2x4 as a cross support. Once the wood gets all chewed up I just grab another of my scrap wood pile.

We drink a lot of bottled water these days, and when refilled with a drop or three of food coloring, they make a wonderful geyser when struck by a fast moving round. I sometimes find onions in the dumpster behind my local grocery store. At 25 yards they blow into onion smelling confetti. It does make you hungry, though.

NECCO WAFERS !
Nothing like edible candy targets. What we don't shoot gets eaten on the ride back home.
The only rule is "all the brown ones are Dad's " I eat them. (Once for my birthday I got 10 rolls of chocolate flavored Necco Wafers) . My next favorite are the black licorice flavored ones , the kids never liked these so I didn't have to make any "Daddy Rules" on those.

Not really on the range, I live in the rough hills of SE Ohio. All the deep hollows have rock
outcroppings in them. In the winter ice sickles form on them. Depending on the freeze and thaw
they can get 8-10 ' long. They "grow in rows" just like a shooting gallery. We start at tip and work
our way up. Takes a 38 or bigger to shoot these. They can be big as a man's waist at the top
sections, some time it takes a couple well placed shoots to bring them down. It's also fun to
shoot them with rifles at long range.

Shoot at a privately owned range; it's either paper or a few steel critters. As a kid, we shot paper plates, tin cans and, Dad had the machine shop at the aerospace facility at which he worked, torch off the rear foot or so (nozzle included) of a JATO bottle. Hung nozzle up (looked like a bell) from a tree limb it made an absolutely beautiful sound when you hit it.

I have bought full sized c02 cylinders that have failed hydro, the last one the earliest test date was 1931, cut it into 3 equal pieces. the top and bottom ring like a bell when hit with cast. Depending on what you hit it with they can ring for 7-10 seconds. It's like the being called to church on the rifle range. The center section which is just a tube is a deader sound, we whack that with the varmint guns, it gives a nice thwack instead of the ring. I've had to start using old pieces of woven ratchet strap to hang them, the rummies I shoot with get bored shooting as big a target as 1/3 of a cylinder and start trying to make it dance by shooting at the chain. The strap can take a lot more abuse than a 3/8" chain before it drops the dinger.

Smaller/newer/thinner tanks give a nice high pitched tone. The old/heavy/thicker tanks a much deeper sound.

Bunch of you guys must live in the wayback ! Shooting anything on the range floor pretty much frowned on now here ( sometimes allowed right at or on berm ). One richochet onto adjacent property and the range(s) would be history. Did bounce cans a lot when I was a kid on the farm(old REAL tin cans much better than today's aluminum !), shot at real pigeons flying from barn to barn - with a .22 !(actually hit some). I have a few ground pounder targets, but I tie them to a stick that is nailed to the top of the berm, so they are hanging in front of the berm. When hit they spin, swing, jump, or fall to the ground when you cut the rope. All are on different lengths, different sizes/shapes.

Favorite yet is a 2x4 planted in the ground with 3" finnish nails up both sides. 1 russett potato each nail, first one to the top wins. 1 shot each turn, must clean the whole potato from the nail before advancing to the next spud. Shoot one out of order, lose a turn. And with loads of trash talk.

Nuthin wrong with clay pigeons either.

Steel mostly, 1-1/2" thick AR plate from my sons work, 55gr FMJ from the AR-15 barely leaves a mark so they are open game for all ammo.

Same son also cut some dueling tree disks with a hanger built right in. They run 6" at the largest and 1" at the smallest in 1" increments so we can mix them up on the tree. Gets very interesting with .38's with the 1" targets!

48x48 steel at 100, 200, 300 & 500 yards, cast only up too 300 as its only mild steel but the 500 will take anything so far.

For lawn games, we have a kind of poppers, some reset, some just fall down. Clays, wood blocks, rocks (a lot of rocks) and plastic bottles etc.

Steel plates. So long as they're smaller (much smaller is better) than the max scoring zone of the targets I shoot in USPSA, and preferably the same shape, it's a good and fun form of training, though the temptation to rely on hearing the ring of the steel to register hits rather than calling the shot needs to be resisted.

More reactive targets are more fun. Kicking a shot shell hull around the berm is cheap entertainment. The chalk thing is something I'd like to try.

Most entertaining, though? Probably what might euphemistically be described as high speed projectile impact induced disassembly of items that mainly suffer such a fate in Hollywood action films. Computers, cell phones, cars and home appliances have been disassembled in such a fashion by folks I know, and yours truly. Messy (we cleaned up our mess), and less spectacular than the digitally and pyrotechnically enhanced movie versions, but I gotta say that it scratched an itch.

Steel is fun, but I have to second charcoal briquettes. Either stand them up on a 12GA hull, or hang them with a piece of twine. Sometimes a little spray paint to make them visible if it's an issue. They're cheap, a good visual, and even biodegradable. At about 2" square they're perfect as a 100 yd target.

For the backyard range in town: little green army men and/or cowboys set up across the yard with an air rifle. Set at different distances for more fun. Backyard sniping at its best. Stand them up on can lids if need be.

This time of year in Central Texas there is not that much water around so I go to one of my stock tanks and sit on the dam and shoot the yellow jackets and red wasps when they land on the water to drink. I've been using a 1885 Low Wall that I had relined to 22lr and it seems to get the job done.

Used to by a sack of potatoes and would stick some long finish nails around the target frames, leftover pumpkins when I could get them cheap were always fun. nowadays I pond stakes in the ground and staple ipsc targets to them and use stickers to seal the holes to get more use out of them. For any long range I have about 12 steal targets in various sizes.

Dueling tress are the most fun for me on the pistol range; ours is fairly challenging, with 5" paddles at a fixed 50', and they take a pretty good thump to move them, so 380s and lighter 9mm won't do---really makes you appreciate the accuracy and momentum of 45s and 357s.
On our rifle range we have hanging gongs, but I'm trying to talk the officers of the club into a rifle dueling tree.

We have a guy at our range that does the potato thing on the 200yd benchrest target. You better be shooting pretty well because he uses small potatoes.
It is fun to see that potato explode when hit with nearly anything.

Hi...
I shoot at two private gun clubs. One allows only paper targets and they discourage anything resembling a human silhouette. They do allow clay birds on the berm of the pistol range.

The other club has a multitude of steel plates on the handgun and rifle ranges. They also allow other types of targets as long as you clean up after yourself. I generally start by ringing steel on the handgun range out to the 25yd marker which is the max distance on that range. Any longer range shooting with a handgun must be done on the rifle range.
After a few hits on the steel plates, I generally transition to shooting rocks on the berm or plastic bottles and cans. I do have some of those reactive targets made of self sealing material that I use sometimes.

I have to side up with elvis and say tv sets. A close second would be bowling balls. A direct center hit made them explode. A off center hit just spun 'em around.

Lately I’ve been working on a 6 in plate with my Lyman sighted Model 52 PreA at 65 yds offhand. Very satisfying to hear that plate ring. Love those subsonic .22s. There’s a 4 in next to it that I can hit off my bench but not so much offhand. Need more practice. Too hot to shoot much now though. I go out to my barn/shop work on something till I'm good and sweaty and then go back inside to cool off. Stay hydrated and stay safe all.

When I was a teenager I was delivery boy for IGA store. One of the perks of the job was your own key to the gate at the city dump. Fun city, rats , crows, bottles jars and cans. The last several years for my grandkids I stop at a Dollar Store and buy cheap cookies. They are like miniature clay pigeons and “Green Friendly” to boot. It’s best to keep custody of “targets” or you might run out by default. Kids will eat up the targets while you are helping another one to aim.

Weld the chain lugs to the back of the plate large ones and run 7/8“ or 1” round bar through it bend into a frame. The gong will hang and deflect downward and protects the bar from damage round bar will also better deflect stray impacts

For most of my adult life we've owned our own land so the preponderance of my shooting has been at home. After whatever firearm is sighted I like to shoot steel of some variety. I've had railroad tie plates and old water heater tanks, odd shaped and sized pieces of steel from the Vo-Ag shop. About 30 years ago when I started shooting my Sharps at long range I went to a junk yard and the owner let me cut the web out of the middle of a 36 in. X 3/4 in. I-beam. I took it home and sketched out a buffalo. I am not an artist but it is recognizable as such. My neighbor built fence out of sucker rod and he let me pick through his junk for enough pieces to build frames for the two buffalo I got from the I-beam. I also welded enough sucker rod on the backs of the buffalo to re-enforce them from bending and two uprights with a crosspiece to make swingers out of them. The buffalo are about 2 ft. long by 18 inches at the hump and weight about 65 lbs. The frame probably weighs 30-35 lbs. Hit with even a 520 gr. bullet they don't swing a lot at 500 yards...or 100 yards, nor do they ring. They just make sort of a dead "thwonk" when hit. As they are mild steel they get cast bullets only though a nitwit guy who was supposed to be my friend did shoot one with a 7 Mag. at 200 yards. Cratered it pretty good too. We sold the farm in 2000 so now instead of 500 and 600 yards they're set up at 50 and 100 yards....that's all I can get here in the woods and hills. As big as they are the 50 yard target sees handguns only and the 100 yard target gets shot a lot offhand. 30+ years of being shot and swinging in the elements and they look as if they will take another 500 years of cast bullets.

Fire extinguishers, I was shooting a 600yd match and was doing pretty good and the shooting went down the line and it had been a long time since I had shot. I decided if i didn't shoot soon my next shot would be like a cold bore shot. So down lower than the steel target and about 20yds to the right I see something round and dull silver. i am thinking beer can. I decide to shoot so the gun isn't ice cold when they get back to me. So I hit it dead center and a huge cloud of white dust envelops the whole area and they have to call the match for about 30 seconds. The match director is jumping up and down screaming "who fired that shot?" I didn't say a word. When it comes to me to shoot I am right on target.

I planted pumpkins and gourds on my berm a few years ago by shooting pumpkins and gourds on my berm after the holidays. they have been growing back ever since. Usually set some of the nicer looking ones on the front step for awhile and shoot the uglier and extra gourds. Then throw them on the back and sides of the berm for next year.

I also have shot the liquid nondairy creamer cups. If you set them label side down and hit them with a .22 the cup sometimes pops up into the air. Of course you end up with a sticky mess.

Another time we were shooting at cans... two Mexicans tried circumventing the border patrol stop on I-5 by walking across our range. A few strafing shots put them behind a huge boulder. Called in MP’s. Were they ever happy to be arrested! Bet they shared that story back home! Never cross Marine bases!!!!

As long as it isn't the 2"x4" boards on out target frames.

Archeological dig here,

We started using the butts from electric poles for our verticals.

Doubled 2x6's for the cross pieces. The cross pieces usually last as long as the rubber belting.

When we used 4x4's for the verticals we were luck to get a year out of them. The Edison poles have been in 8-10 years and they have years of life left. And they're free for the asking.

Target mounting material is 1/2" thick by 4' wide rubber belting from the local stone quarry, again, free for the asking.

We also have a section for reactive targets, my favorite is an oxygen cylinder cut in 1/3's. Top and bottom ring like a bell. 470 N.E. with cast can give a good 10 seconds of boooooing.

Read all eight pages of this thread. Some have listed the kinda target they shoot at others the weapon of choice. I am not sure what way the thread was intended to be so I am going to list both. LOL because I can.

I enjoy shooting steel targets. Mostly 300blk,38spl. I used to shoot 22s all day long but now with the new NYS laws I refuse to pay extra for ammo. So we only shoot roll your own ammo here. The only .22 shooting is done with an air rifle.

I also mouse hunt with a flashlight at night on my home range. I do not have much luck. So my favorite thing to shoot at the range is mice. I really wish I could afford some night vision. Be happy with what you got I always say and I have a range so I am happy about that.

Sadly, my most favourite shooting target has pretty much become obsolete! To wit, telephone Yellow Book directories! Where I worked they'd have 'phone books from just about every municipality -- quite the bundle. And... I'd be in wait for the new ones to come, as I'd scavenge the now out-dated ones. I'd take a "shepherd's hook" wrought iron doo-hickley meant for hanging potted plants, instead -- with a loop of cord going through the 'phone book and on said hook -- go back twenty-five yards with handgun, or 75 yards with rifle. Every hit sent an awsome display of confetti :) :) :) :).

We shoot bowling pins at 15 yards. No prizes, just a monthly fun match. But, to make it a bit more challenging, we hang a 6" steel plate at 30 yards and an 8" steel plate at 40 yards. Bragging rights only. And for the real challenge, we hang a bowling pin at 60 yards. When you can hit that, standing, no rests, you're showing some serious skill.

Some of the more fun things to shoot was junk lawn mowers that still sort of ran, full washing machine,
lots of bags of cement that had hardened in the rain, cinder blocks, and non-rebuildable car engine blocks.
The weapon of choice for these was the single shot .50BMG.

Funny range story.

A friend and I went to a range and since the owner had not seen my bud he went over a few rules...

"If you hit a light, it costs $30, a destroyed target holder is $50, ceiling tiles are $20, OK?"

My friend said, "well if that's the case, I'll take three lamps, five ceiling tiles, and one target holder, do I pay in advance?"

The owner stumbled out "you're not supposed to use these as TARGETS, do NOT hit them deliberately!"

My bud said, "Jeez, you need to make up your mind here what I need to shoot!"

He and I laughed our arses off and the owner finally got it. RIP doyle.

I have a full set of IHMSA center fire chickens & pigs + a full set of rimfire everything. I also have my own range with 50,100 & 200 yd. firing points.

My days of competing with my old shooting buddy @ 50 yds. at the chickens sadly is over. Our rules were: 1. strictly off-hand ("standing" in old IHMSA lingo) 2. any gun & any load as long as it was a handgun.

My shooting buddy has Parkinson disease & I have only 50% vision in my right eye (my shooting eye) due to glaucoma.

Now I shoot those chickens @ 25 yds. with my left eye: alone or with my grandchildren.

Even @ 84 I sometimes go back to 50 & occasionally tip one of those chickens over. (spray & pray?)

When bored with paper targets at the short range, (25&50yds) when shooting .22rf, I like using my Remington 121 to destroy the shale chips that work their way to the surface on the 50yd backstop. Off-hand open sights at about 65yds. The chips, about thumb size contrast well against the top soil. The 121 is ideal for this ''sport'' as it's slender and light, comes up and holds like a fitted small gauge bird gun. With a 6 O'clock hold I usually get 60-70% first shot hits.

I like to sight my guns in at the range and then shoot at anything that shows the hit like dirt clods or Rocks.

Yesterday I sighted the Auto-Berg in with slugs, and after I was satisfied with the POI, I shot at some fairly big rocks that were sitting on the 50 yard line. I hit one three times before it finally broke in half One Ounce Turkish Slugs similar to Brenneke's with 23 gr of Unique. Looked like about 1200 fps? This rock was about 20 lbs and moved back about a foot every time I hit it. I shot at it 5 times and hit it directly 3 times, all offhand with Open Sights.

Very satisfying and good enough for Pigs!.

I like to shoot ping pong balls, I hang them on a string in front of my board back stop when I target shoot. I find it fun as well as challenging.

I have several old oxygen cylinders that I cut different lengths and made gongs out of . I enjoy playing a tune . They all ring with a different sound.

Slower cast boolits work the best. They will ring like the bells of Notre Dame when hit right.

Just don't go too big, even cast boolits can break chunks out of those oxygen cylinders. 470 Nitro Express with 480 Ruger boolits make short work of the cylinders, breaking chunks off with almost every shot once the first chunk breaks.

But it's so much fun :guntootsmiley:

I used the shattered cylinder for a Halloween lantern one year. Candle inside, it looked awesome.

The wife didn't appreciate it as much as I did.
