Well, we had a weekend of 50 degree weather and I got reacquainted with my SAA. I could look at these pistols all day long. I am hoping to drool over some member photos of one of the finest guns ever created. Here is my one and only. Its a split serial number cavalry with a 45 acp cylinder. I have close to 2500 rounds through it, and it is still as tight as the day I bought it (unfired).

Needs ivory, lol. Nice Colt!

I'll get some pictures of my Colt's taken and posted. Just Colt's right? Or are the foreign fakes allowed?

I would pay a nice chunk of change for a set of ivories! I tried frantically to get a set before the dreaded ban, but it was way to late--it was gone or hoarded already. I would love to see some clones. Actually, the pony is probably not showing up in the pic,so technically, mine could be a clone!

There are no ivory workers in Michigan? As long as Michigan doesn't have a state ban in place, intrastate sale of ivory should be legal. My ivory stash has slam dunk provenance and I cringe a little when I started hacking on some of it to make grips for my pistols. When I saw the ban coming, I got what I could to supply my needs for the long haul. There is nothing like the feel of elephant ivory.

Ivory looks ok but slick like this makes it hard to keep a good grip without overdoing it...If I were to hunt with this one, I'd put some oversized rubber on it.
My Smith sent it back East somewhere to have the grips carved, took 3 month turn-around...when he got it back it was another month before they completed their work on the interior.
From the time I ordered the SAA it took a little over 6 months to take possession.

I would prefer 'old yellowed ivory' also...my Smith said It would get that way...when my grandson was an old man!

I polish my ivory to a very fine finish, and even with sweaty hands, the grip is very good. By far my favorite material.

Holly Hannah, those are some beauties! SJH, are those 1860s the real deal? I have a friend with a really nice original, but the engraving is very worn and it has some pitting throughout. Nevertheless, a fine and envious collection indeed. I am almost to the point I could focus on single actions for the rest of my life. I have a few more of the "classics" to fill some empty real estate, but after that, I am after a second gen in 38 special.

Love Life, the stash in Michigan is non existent. I went to the Birch Run show a month ago to get my hands on some blanks. I found one person in a 500 table show who had one set of blanks. He wanted 1200 for the blanks. Ouch.

It would have been a serious internal debate with me if I didn't have any.

The 1860's are Colt's made during their Black Powder Series run back in the late 1970's early 1980's. I shoot them. Since this picture was taken I've acquired another one. They are a joy to shoot and easy to clean.

A fellow club member carved this set for me around 1967 for a whopping 60 bucks. He would do a S&W set of Magna grips for a hundred.

I kinda prefer stag grips on a SAA. Walnut is nice and ivory is pretty, but you can't beat stag.

It's been decades since I've owned a Colt Single Action...that changed today, I just ordered a beautiful Bisley Model .45 with a 5.5 inch barrel made in 1898. Yeah, it cost me, but I've been after a nice Bisley for some time now. I don't have it yet, (ships today) but here's the pics from the dealer.

I've had this one for 20+ years now...from back when they were $600 or so. I fitted a .45 ACP cylinder to it that actually shoots better than the LC...but both will beat 2" @ 25 yds from a rest with my loads. The ACP cylinder occasionally pierces a primer...so I don't use it much...

The stocks are home made from some good walnut, no bevel which makes 'em a bit painful to shoot if your a 'pinkie under' guy...Best Regards, Rod

A few years back I was working the SASS convention in Las Vegas for Powder River Cartridge Co. Our booth was next to the NRA booth which had a display of Hollywood guns from the NRA Museum. When the show was over I help Schriver (SP?), who you see on TV all the time, pack them up and got to fondle them. Here' I am with one of the Quigley rifles and the M92 John Wayne using in True Grit and Rooster Cogburn movies. Also is the display with the SAA John Wayne used in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence movie.

The little brown truck of happiness dropped off the Bisley today and she is a looker! The first thing I did was measure the cylinder throats, to my surprise they all went just a hair over .452, my 1904 Colt New Service .45 Colt doesn't go over .449. Everything works like new and everything looks good. It's great to have a Bisley in hand again, I much prefer it to the SAA. Trigger could be lighter, but it's smooth.

Congratulations on the new one! Doesn't get much cooler that that bisley--it has a really nice case and that 60s deep black blueing they use to put on the pythons.

Very fine guns in this thread. Must have been a good feeling holding that Quigley. Quigley Down Under was the one and only movie I can remember my dad watching more that twice. I think maybe Jeremiah Johnson could have been on the list as well.

So here is a jewel gracing my see right now. Unfortunately it doesn't belong to me. A friend wanted me to take a look at it and let him know what I thought.
What I think is it needs a permanent place with me!
It is a numbers matching .45lc dated to 1891.
It is in all original condition. It has never been refinished. I took it apart and cleaned it. It is nice.
It is owned by a gal who's great grandfather carried it when he was a sheriff. They still have his holster.
Cabela's offered $500 for it because they said the barrel was not the original one.
I call baloney. Looking at it you can see the holster wear.
Anyway, it is a beautiful piece that I wish I could buy. 189605

I'd recommend the family get it lettered.

Definitely get it "lettered"; both from the archives as to manufacture and who it was shipped to. Also from the family including a history of the great grandfather specifically his service as a sheriff. Also with copies of any photo's of him, particularly as a sheriff and any with the revolver on in the holster. Get as much detail as possible.

Unfortunately they don't still have his badge.
That would make a super cool display.

that really angers me at cabellas, cant they be just honest. the big cabellas at sidney ne. had this jerk working there in the gun dept not too long ago, that told one lie after another. his mouth just run and run and and he just wouldnt stop. ive done enough building of guns to know he knew nothing and could make it up faster than his mouth could move. i never ever went back there after that. thanks for the colt picture.

What gen is that SAA? It is a first generation. It was made in the very early 1930s and chambered in 32-20. I paid $180 for it and one in 45 Colt. The 45 was in much nicer condition. I converted the 32-20 to 44 SPL in the early 1970s. I bought the 44 cylinder for $25 and the barrel for $19. They were both made by Colt. In the 1990s my son was going to college and my wife came to me and said I need $1000 for tuition. I called a friend and sold him the 45 Colt SA, a first year MFG Ruger 44 Mag flat top with real stag grips, and a Winchester Super X Model 1 in 12 GA. I think I got $1400 for the lot. One day I will tell the story of those Colt SAs and women who sold them to me. Her husband had died and left her with a house and garage full of guns. It would take too long to tell today.

A few years ago one of the older gentlemen at the range had a bunch of guns out on the table for sale since he didn't shoot anymore. This one was in a nice cowboy action holster and literally everyone at the range gave it a glance, saw adjustable sights and immediately assumed Ruger and kept on walking. I did the same, the first two times I walked by - but on the third pass I noticed the medallions on the grip. It's an 80's vintage New Frontier in 44 special and I asked what he would take for it. It having been ignored all day, he said he wanted $600 including the holster and I said SOLD!

I have been watching AMERICAN PICKERS all afternoon and when one episode was about to start Frank was talking about people and what they collect and while talking he was pulling a great looking Colt SA out of a holster. It was nickel plated and had a 7-1/2 inch barrel. It was just a quick shot and was never shown again. He was standing amid piles of junk while he was looking at the pistol. Most of the **** they buy I wouldn't carry home if it were given to me.
