View Full Version : I am undoubtedly a fumble fingered idiot - can't find threads on cast with 300 Savage

I can't find the right search function - hey, I started out with phones that had cords and phonograph players!
I do not have the rifle, (Savage lever action), but I was thinking of surprising the guy with some cast boolet loads if I can find something that would work well. Just out of curiosity what has worked well here. Only powder I can find regularly is IMR 3031...hate metering it but it works well. Can I use Winchester 760 in it? I have two pounds of that which were given to me. If not, anyone have data for 8mm Mauser or 7.62x39mm with 760? Sorry, extra question thrown in there, my bad.
I like the looks of that 300 Savage, nifty cartridge.

savage uses 308 cast data.
3031 will work just fine, try 26grs.

Your phone had a phonograph player!! We started out with a party line when I was a kid. No TV until I was 13, listened to Gunsmoke on the radio, no phonograph player on the phone or anywhere else.

As stated use 308 data and full length size everything.

The Lyman cast bullet handbook has .300 Savage data using several bullets and quite a few powders.

There is plenty of loading data for it. Jacketed starting loads work just fine. Work up from there. 760 is a little slow and 748 is more suited for the cartridge.

It has a really short neck. So most bullets will be seated w/ the gas check below the neck. Hasn't prevented me from working up loads.

Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook #3 and #4 both have loads for 300 Savage and 3031.
You didn't mention a bullet , several are listed , Lyman #311291, 170 grain , sized .309 , with gas check and standard large rifle primer:

starting load - 26.7 grains @ 1823 fps
maximum load - 35.0 grains @ 2388 fps

If this is not the correct boolit you intend to use , post the correct one and I will look it up.
When you don't have information , it's just a shot in the dark. Hope it helps.

I saw no data listed in either for 760 powder.

W-760 is H-414.
you could use it but for someone else's rifle, where you can't test stuff, I would just stick with the 3031.

I would not spend much time loading them until you can get the rifle in hand and check OAL. I guess you might load some, seated long, then when you get the rifle, seat them deeper until they chamber. You might have better luck with a non-bore rider like 311041. A lot depends on the throat of the rifle. Some will handle big bore riders, but many will not.

Close enough to 308 win
