I am working up a load to use in the Marlin 47/70 rifle for deer

Right now working with a all stick on WW alloy and the NOE 460 405 gr RF GC mold

I know the stick on WW are not pure , but still a soft alloy

I have found the Powder Coated bullets loads are grouping around 2" at 100 yards , more than good enough for the 75 - 100 yard Max area I normaly hunt

But I was wondering how much the Powder Coat over the nose reduces the amount the bullet will expand ?

I am thinking if it is a lot , to work up a way of stopping the powder coat part way up the nose

Thanks
John

None. The PC is much softer than the lead.

set up an experiment.
put 2 in a vice and close it.
drop a 6 lb hammer on them from a measured height.
shoot one of each into some wet paper.

Four 38-55 bullets pulled from my 100 yard backstop. Alloy was 10 brhn according to my Cabine Tree tester before PC. Load velocity ranged from 1300-1600 for the loads used. No penciling through with these.

Powder coating does not affect bullet expansion, unless you use so much powder that you fill the hollow point cavities. Otherwise, you won't see any difference in expansion between coated and not.

Forgot to note that the mushroomed bullets I posted were flat points, not hollow point. Lee 38-250 mold.
