View Full Version : Alliant Reloader 16. No Data For 308, Where To Start?
I bought some Reloader 16 and checking the Alliant site I saw no data yet for 308 using any bullet but in particular the 150gr I wanted to try. I emailed Alliant and the guy mailed back they have not tested it on 308 yet. ? One of the most popular calibers in the US? Anyways, there is data on the 7mm-08 for 140gr.
Place to start using 7mm-08 data on the low end minus 10%?

kind of maybe.
usually using the middle of two other cartridges would be a good place to start.
if you had data for the 7-08 and the 358 win or the 8 mauser you could figure out where to start.
you could always use data for the next fastest powder and work within it's limits.
I don't know where rl-16 is supposed to fall in the burn charts.
in my mind it should be around the 4064-varget area.
but it could burn just a touch faster depending on the bullet weight.

Are you just trying to use what you have or on a budget?
Powder should be in fairly good supply. Why not spend the $20-30 on a pound of powder that's a known performer with plenty of data?
It says that it is "well within 4350 range" so maybe start low end there.
As for why buy a new powder, well why not? :Fire:

There was some talk of this at THR, and Alliant chimed on (relevant posts 22 and 23)

Thanks. I dont go on THR as ive heard they are rather touchy and will ban you at the drop of a hat. I can certainly use it in my 243, 30-06 and 270. I wasnt planning on buying it but there it was so picked it up. The talk was of heavier bullets in the 168gr and up. Maybe I will give the 150gr a shot anyways if I can figure out a safe starting point

from the sounds of it you can pretty much scoop the case full and jam a bullet down on top.
and that would be safe.
looks like rl-16 is closer to 4350 than 4064 that's what I got they were saying, if so the 30-06 or 243 should really like it.
Should. If they couldnt get the pressure up to where they were satisfied it is probably pretty safe. I also got that it was far closer to r17 than 15. There is data for 15 and 17. I will use that and start in.

I'd be interested in your velocity's.
I'll post them up when I start. I'm still working on IMR Target in 38sp
