Found this in my internet travels.
It was interesting, not sure if I believe everything that was said in the article.

Well, I watched the video and saw him mess up his first 80% blank manually so I believe that.
I also believe he cut himself trying to get rid of flash from the 3-D printed plastic lower.
And the ready made

But according to the internet
He lives in Brooklyn, New York (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooklyn,_New_York),
So I think he broke the law! Opps! [smilie=b:

But the laws must not apply to him because of his liberal leaning or profession or something.

The fact that it pisses off the right people is probably more important then other facts. With the price of factory made rifles dropping, I see less of a need for this, from law abiding citizens. Smuggling entire guns drug shipments seems simpler than making a bunch of lowers.

These 80% lowers are quite common here at gun shows and at some shops. I'd never heard of the dedicated CNC mini mill to finish one up. Cool but not $1,500 worth of cool. I didn't think this kind of endeavor would be legal in Kali.

I have enough guns registered in my name that if I want another AR15 I'll just spend the $100 for a new finished stripped lower and drive on.

I wished it was like it was when I was a kid , you just walked into a store and bought a gun no paper work no questions asked ,

They were legal in California. Neighbor was selling 80% lowers and had equipment that he let the buyer use to finish. He also helped the buyer use the tools. I believe the ATF changed rules on how much he could help the buyer. He no longer sells 80% lowers. Sold equipment. A federal firearms conviction did not appeal to him.

Still legal in CA but you have to serial number and register with DOJ.
The whole ITAR/Gunsmith thing is a Cluster.
Guys that would thread a barrel for a reasonable charge
and gone down the rabbit hole.

$100? You buy high end! Anderson stripped lowers are always on sale for $39!

If you want an untraceable gun buy a stolen one from a crook. Rumor has it there are lots of them out there.

Or buy one in Mexico that can only be traced back to the ATF.

I watched a video of one 80% dealer. You bought the lower for $80.00 then bought the jig for $169. Then with your router and drill/drill press did the machining. That required three drill bits and an end mill at est. $60 bucks. Time estimated was 2 hours.
Do you think a criminal would go this route or steal a gun?

There was a time not long ago when those 80% lowers were way cheaper than a finished one from a shop. Now I see lowers given away when you buy something else. Seems like with such a glut on the market they would slow production. Whats the point of making them if your only getting $40? An 80% lower is $40. As for value, guess depends on what you buy, I got a blem billet 80% for $35, they run $200 finished. I went in with a friend on the jig and tools. Been debating about selling it.

Just remember those cheap stripped lowers need $part$. Makes good sense to sell them cheap and hope to sell lotsa uppers, lower parts kits, upgrade triggers, magazines and ammo. :D

Mary B,

I've used a bunch of different stripped lowers ranging from $100 down to $49.99.

In the Wired article, he says he did so at the Wired office in California. He couldn't bring them with him to New York, so he turned them over to the local PD before he went back.

Remember when they raid you for your real guns bought from wherever they will also take the "ghost ones"

Time to use either was wasted.

Way back when, one of the corner preachers was exercising his right to free speech telling the the ancient tale of $100 street corner Uzis. I immediately offered $250 for any he could provide. Yes, you can hear jaws or lips flapping. ;-)
