Some of you know some don't but I build knives, Most of them I give away. At Christmas time I was at my in laws house and was telling the family about the knife I built my Father In Law. I asked them have you ever seen it? They all said NO. I built this knife for my Father in Law as a "Grandfather Knife". It has three Mosaic pins. Each Mosaic pin represents one of his kids and their birthstone color. Then there is 7 single pins. Those stand for his 7 grand kids. There is three pins in a cluster, those stand for his in law kids. Last his favorite foot ball team is the Raiders so the handle is Gray and Black. I built a antler stand for the knife. The antler is from a deer that I killed when I was hunting with my father and my grandfather.
This knife took a lot of time and thought building it. My father in law never once showed anyone in the family that knife. I don't know where he keeps it but it is not out to see and he doesn't use it. I guess he didn't like it.

Very Nice work.
And maybe your Father in Law Likes the knife too much because you put so much thought into it in respect to the Family.
That is something that may be his Private Moments, and not a show piece.
Those you sometimes keep all to yourself, rather than trying to explain them to others.

Good job - did you make the mosaic pins? If so, you did a good job. My mosaic pins are not near so fancy as those. I do have one pin I like where I take an brass I-beam inside a tube to make an "H" for my last name. I've been making knives for the last 4 or 5 yrs and enjoy it nicely. Like you, most of my knives are given to friends and family with enough sold to feed my ego.

Like you, I don't understand your F-I-L; that knife and display stand SHOULD be on display in a prominent place in the house. I guess I might have to ask him sometime in a low profile way why he doesn't display the knife.

That's why I don't really like real fancy knives or guns for that matter. Any time I get one, I put it away and don't use it because I don't want to mess it up. I'm more of a practical type person. Maybe he feels the same way.

Take it back. I'll find a way to acquire more kids and start liking football. ;-)

I do make my own pins. My wife likes dogs a lot and her pin is the center one. I think it looks like a dog foot print. Making pins was the first thing I started on when I wanted to make knives. I wanted to understand that process and I like doing fancy pins.

The pins are actually called Mosaic pins. They are not Masonic, so they don't have the masonic emblem. They are just a pattern I made up like this one.

Nice work, Ron. Your stuff looks great. I'll bet that your father-in-law values his knife a great deal. Wouldn't want to take it out in the woods and loose it, and if displayed something like that is pretty easily stolen. I think he's got it put away for safe keeping, but I'll bet he takes it out and looks at it ever once in awhile.

idahoron: You sure make some NICE pins, and knifes also. My pins are not near so fancy - how do you get the epoxy to fill the tube?

Yep, that center pin does look like a dog's paw - the red is the pad, and small pins are the toes. I might have to try something like that. My wife (and her whole family) are "dog crazy"! When I first met her I had to pass the "dog test" before she'd consider dating me.

I would show that that knife to everyone even if they didn't want to see it. Nice work!

When I fill the tubes I hold them vertical. Then I take a wooden Popsicle stick and I scoop some up and push it in the bottom and I do it fast. Eventually it comes out the top. Then I push my finger over the bottom to keep it from coming back out. Then I push the pins down from the top.

Lot of guys think they need a big long blade for hunting, i own a few myself as i have collected Buck Knives over the years, but they are stil brand new never used. My 'Go to' hunting knife is a Buck 112 folder, in all reality the front 2" of a blade is what gets 99% of the use, I have a very similar knife to Ron's little Caper, mine is a Caper as well made by Outdoor Edge, its a great little knife but definitely not the Quality of Ron's. Ron does AMAZING work on these knives! I had my hands on a couple of them on our whitetail hunt.

That's much how I make the pins, fill tube with colored epoxy, then push filler pins from top which forces excess epoxy out and doesn't introduce much in the way of air bubbles. I only work with pins in the inch or so length, not the long 3 and 6" pins.
