I have been playing with casting more off than on for over 15 years. For me finding lead has been hard. 3 weeks ago and friend of mine called and said he had something for me. I get a email this morning with a tracking number. Tomorrow I'm receiving 200 pound of 2 tones of lead.

The info I received on it is 97 % Pb 3% Sb. This is not in my wheelhouse of knowledge. Is this a good mix to start? Should I add anything to it for pistol and different rifles from 22 hornet to 45/70?

I feel like a 2 year old on Christmas morning.

Is that 200lbs of 2 tons of lead?

IF so, that is really from Santa Claus...

I have more than that...but a ton or so is shot. Anyway, you would be surprised how little space it takes to store,

yep,,,, clear out a 3'X3' area.

add 1% tin to that and you'll be good to go.

Exactly right. It won't take up nearly as much room as you think. I have around 1500lbs and it sure doesn't look like much when I stop and look.

Wow heck of a haul!

according to my math you'll just need 40lbs of tin to go with and you are good to go!

The 200 pounds landed this afternoon. Need to unload them. I'm feeling very lucky. :p now i need the time to start smelting them.

Where or what is a good source of time. What temperature do most of you smelt at?

This has been 1 of those few life long friends. We have done a lot for each other growing up as kids. As teens and adults has been the same way. He will get some lead in return.

You sir are most definitely underprivileged, you should apply for Federal assistance for lead stamps. You may be eligible for a monthly allotment up to a hundred pounds, Don't wait the program is limited!

700-725 is plenty.
get you some [or make some] angle iron ingot molds.
1-1/2" angle, cut about 8" long is good.
they stack up tighter, and pour quicker.

Well... When you put it that way... it would be in the interest of National Security that its citizens be knowledgeable, armed, and ready to fight and resupply if the need should arise. ;)

I think I remember seeing these. And did it have angle iron on the ends?

4000 lbs of free lead is definitely a nice score. I'm happy when I get lead for free too.

650 to 700º is about right on temp. On the ingot molds, some use angle and some use flat bar on the ends. Most cut the ends with a slight draft to aid in dumping the ingot. Buy or build several. With that much lead to do, you will spend a ton of time waiting on just a few to cool.

There are some good stickies on smelting, smelting set-ups and safety that are worth reading.

Smoke, now it is picking the right color to make most of them. It will be a ton or 2 of work...
