Old topic I know but my eyes are going bonkers reading all of the back posts on this issue.
I am loading for the Uberti Cattleman Hombre and want a light load using Unique and a 250 rnfp bullet. I see where 8 grains is a standard load but can you go down to around 7.2 to 7.5 grains to make it easy on the Colt clone?

Yes, I have loaded 7.0 to 7.5 grains of Unique with the Lee 255 grain boolit and they shot fine with good accuracy and reduced recoil.

Lyman #4 says 6.0 grs for 595 fps with the 454190. Max is 9.0 for 875 fps.

Yes, and I have loaded lots of 6 and 7 grain loads
Work wonderfully

Thank you gentlemen, I thought so but have learned in the last 50 years of reloading it doesn't hurt to ask for others opinions.

When developing low-speed loads, be certain to bring a stiff brass or hard aluminum rod that will allow you to knock out any stuck bullets (never use wood). Anytime a shot doesn't sound or feel right, check for a stuck bullet. If you drop your rod into an unloaded gun, all the way to the bottom of the chamber, and then mark it, you can use it for a stuck-bullet tester (without having to remove the cylinder). I cut mine so it is flush with the muzzle. If there's anything in there, the rod sticks out.

I've loaded some 185 SWC's and they are fine.

Would need to pull one apart since I cannot remember what I loaded it to. It was fun and functional and that's all that matters.

fooled around one day and loaded some 185 swcs for the 45acp with 3 grains of bullseye. Rolled beer cans just fine.

Best way to get a "light load" would be to reduce bullet wt. to 200 gr. or so. Then it's just a matter of trying faster powders until you find what your gun likes, and how much it wants to shoot its best, and still be a mild load. More reason to shoot, and that's always a good thing!

light in the 45 colt is 165grs.
I have used 4.6 grs of clay's or 6 grs of titegroup for clean cases with minimal recoil.
both of those loads will safely go from 165 up to 255gr boolits.
before that I used 7.5grs of unique for a nice soot streak down the side of the case, but with plenty of accuracy.
