Have a couple shooting 16 twists now at local matches. Most are 18 twists. I believe the 16 twist would really shine with bullets 1.5-1.7 long. Or in the 550 grn-575 grn range maybe a little more even depending on nose shape

I have a barrel from a 458 win mag with a 14 inch twist rate and it is a nice heavy weight barrel. I have a passing urge to do a barrel stub in 45-70 for the long boolit as you mentioned.

I had a CZ 458 for awhile and I was able to download it for 400ish boolit and at 50 yds it would punch one hole groups all day long. I'd like to assemble a stub barrel for my Encore setup.

You said there are fellers shooting 14 inch twist rates and doing well? You don't know their boolts and loads by chance? I would like to have a dedicated 45-70 barrel for shooting blackpowder loads.this would be scoped and probably around 18 inch bull barrel.

The fastest Ive seen used in bpcr is 16 twist. They perform well with bullets 500-550 grn One guys really likes the 535 postel. I'm betting a long bullet would stay stable out to 1000 + yds.

I asked a similar question. I have a 15" .45-70 Encore Pistol Barrel in a 1-14" twist. Absolute dead accurate with the right loads. Tried both 405gr and 500gr loads with great results. Loads were with H4198, Varget, 5744, Unique and RL7. I got the cleanest burn and best accuracy with Unique with a 405gr cast. For 500gr loads, Unique leaded the barrel badly. RL7 gave me the best results and cleanest burn in 500+gr. Both 405gr and 500gr were trapdoor level loads. The recoil difference is significant when stepping up to a 500gr flat nose.

With black powder though, you probably need to duplex to great the full burn in a 15" barrel, but it's probably a lot of fun!

My 45/120 Sharps has a 28" 1:14 twist and I have shot boolits up to 580gn with black powder loads.

KEWL. I had suspected as much. Guessing that the next step would be to begin with the barrel stub. Sounds fun and the Encore should be the shis nis with a 18 inch heavyweight 14 twist barrel.

Yeah, I used to have a 20" Katahdin Barrel on mine. Great handling and a tack driver but it was in a 1:20. I just received my 27" .45-70 in 1:14 and am really curious as to how it shoots. If you are looking for a 1:14 for Encore, I would suggest Match Grade Machine or Bullberry.

I have an older Ruger 458 win mag barrel that is nice n fat so along with my sacrificial Encore barrel as the female portion of the stub should make a dandy 14 inch twist bull barrel of 18 to 20 inches in length.

Looking forward to playing with this lil blaster with Blackpowder loads ... Gonna have a snazzy Leo scope (very untraditional) but think it will be fun to the umpteenth power
