Got me a nice S&W 25-5, 6" yesterday morning. Have shot a few in back yard. Shot
some Win Cowboy, wasn't impressed. Shot some 242WCs and it grouped well at 50'
for off hand shooting. I think it will fine tune off bags with the 242WC/ 8.5g Unique.
The only thing I don't like about the gun is red ramp front/ white outline rear. To much bling distracts from sight picture.187300

That's a good looking pistol you've got there. I've got a 4" 25-7 MG and it's by far my most accurate pistol. I shoot a Saeco 250 SWC over 9.5 grains of Unique with a WLP in Starline brass.

Some sight black on the front sight will solve the visibility problem. Been there done that.

Yea, I have went magic marker route before. I have 3 other 25s, my favorite is a 25-2 acp. It has
patridge font and plain back blade. The others have red ramp, but not white outline. I have a extra plain N back, but I'm out of blade fronts. Haven't been able to get any for two years. Those
sights are fine for cops in low light conditions, not worth a **** for fine shooting. I don't like
the plain Baughman sight either, tops get polished from holster wear. The older models have pinned fronts, newer ones are milled with the rib. In which case you are stuck with them. Unless
you cut off blade and have key slot milled in ramp. The last 4" m19 I did, I had to file out my
own front blade.

My 25-2 1955 target shoots a 200 gr swc (lee, rcbs ,hg...doesn't matter) 4gWST cuts one ragged hole at 50' shot bullseye with mine for years

I like the sight picture on my 25-5. Mine will group very well and is a blast to shoot. Best 45LC I've ever purchased.

The last older S&W 45 Colt revolver (70's or early 80's vintage) that I owned had overly large chambers. Hornady Cowboy .454" bullets would fall straight through just by dropping them in. No push was needed. The barrel's groove diameter, of course, was much smaller. I gave up trying to get it to shoot well and it became trade bait for something else.

Yup I had one of those chamber mouths were 457

I too had one with .457 throats. Bought an old Lyman 454424 mould that would drop .457 boolits, sized 'em .457, and they shoot great out of the .452 bore.

Mine was .459", sold it immediately and bought a Ruger...

The old pinned barrel 25-5s were known for WAY oversized cylinder throats. The newer, non-pinned ones generally have proper sized throats and shoot much better. They were a very popular duty gun in various locales in the US in the 70s and 80s: Atlanta area, Dallas area and Southern California (not LA, but Long Beach, San Bernardino, etc.). They worked VERY well on slow learners.

Yep I had one of the early 80's 25's in .45 LC...bore was 0.452", throats were 457"-459"...Abominable accuracy 4-5" @ 25 yds. I had a friend at the service shop at S&W...took it to him with the data, had him mic it while I was there (to the consternation of the Troopers waiting in line for work on their 66's), and he sent it off to the factory for review. Got it back a cpl weeks later with the target 4" group with Remington 255's and a note that said the cylinder and barrel were within factory manufacturing tolerances! That was the only Smith I've ever had that wouldn't group (0.005-0.007" swaging will do that). Traded it to the Lyman Blue Trail Range gunshop for credit towards a M57 that was superb. (Told them all about the trip to S&W too...it was an upfront trade). Haven't had one since, tho the Mountain Gun series .45's have tempted me. Rod

Have owned several in the Mountain Gun series and still have two. All, including the 45 Colt, have been very good.

I have wanted one of these for years some day I will come across one.

I have got a 25-5, 8 3/8", I hate carrying it but the thing shoots so good I'm afraid to trade it off
for a shorter barrel gun that may not shoot. When I was young and dumb I always bought the
longest barrel available. Not only on revolvers, rifles and shotguns too. Nothing wrong with that,
but found out that I could do just as well with shorter barrels. Anymore I stick to 5-61/2" S&Ws
for target and field use. That doesn't mean I won't jump on any old P&R blue, S&W if the price is
right.

Drm50;
My favorite deer hunting revolver is a Model 29 with 8 3/8" barrel and a scope. I carry it in a Bianchi Hush System across the chest holster and it carries beautifully, even in rough country. My "bad weather gun" is a Ruger RedHawk with 7 1/2" barrel with scope that uses the same rig. That rig takes all of the pain out of managing a long barreled revolver or TC Contender.
