I've been drooling (figuratively ;) ) over a "Dirty Harry" Smith & Wesson 6 1/2" model 29-2 w/ PB, TT, TH, & RC serial numbered N63xxx at a nearby shop, and am curious re its date of manufacture. All sorts of references -- oldguns.net being my favorite -- for dates on all sorts of firearms, but I cannot seem to find any site/source for this Smith & Wesson firearms!

Might you direct me to a source -- other than sending $75.00 to S&W -- where I might look up/ascertain its age? (Or, better yet if you know, and will provide info to me!)

Thanks much!!!

The History of Smith & Wesson by Roy Jinks has a section on identifyin' years of manufacture by serial numbers.

1972-1974 I keep this list in my computer to help out when buying guns online at auction. N Frame serial numbers ran from 1970 -1983.

The guys at the Smith and Wesson forum are great and always ready to help out. Make sure to read the threads first, however before asking your question. They have saved me from some costly mistakes such as a gun that looked great but was not correct due to a wrong front sight. Those guys know their stuff

Thanks. jonp! I tried S&W Forum, to the point where they're supposed to send me a password to get on; I tried three times, and have yet to get the pass-word link. Hence is why I inquired here. Btw, I sent an email to S&W forum voicing my problem, and have yet to get a response as well. It surely seems to be a great site -- but, as stated, I can't seem to get access.
Thanks again for chart -- I copied/pasted it, and now have a copy.

No worries! Keep trying on the SW Forum. If your into them it's a great place to get information and they have a direct pipeline to SW Historians and a couple current ones that are members and will answer with authority.

Did you get the gun? What was the shape and how much were they asking? If you take a picture of it in the shop and post it on the SW site they will tell you what you have, approximate value and if your overpaying for it. They are pretty honest about the value. Be aware that the original box and wrapper increases the value.
