So not sure the proper name but looks like big fluffy chunks of steel wool but feels like lead will have lots of pix tomorrow.
Any idea what I'm looking at?

Lead wool! Should be pure lead.

I've only turned lead a couple of times but the chips looked like that. I have read about uses for it but what applications it was used for escapes me at the moment.

makes water stay in the pipes when you hit it hard enough.

If someone was cutting up a sailboat keel, the shavings from the blade or chainsaw can look like you describe.

Pack it into holes in concrete and it works like a bolt anchor. Also makes an anchor fit in oversized holes.

It also comes in the kits to make wood turned darts. Used to weight the darts.

lead wool I got a few years back was out of rad con bags probably from the Hanford WA site story I was told from the seller ,Looked like coarse steel wool except lead , Lots of loss when I got it smelted down from oxides most bags had a tear on them and moisture was present causing oxidation but it was all nice and soft

Squirt swaging dies make a pile of it in a hurry. Iirc, it used to used in the auto body industry to "tin" the metal before leading the seams (pre-bondo).

Used to pack in belled cast iron sewer pipes after oakum for sealing.

I see it is expensive in its present form. $8.00 / pound at Menards!

I've got 100 lbs. of lead wool that I would trade 2/1 for pure lead.

So went through all the pix from the scrap yard no wool pix but each bundle is the size of a throw pillow and looks to have been made not a by product of another process.
