I already cast supers with lee 155gr mold. I was looking at the lee 230gr for subs. has anyone had good results from it. my other choice is from NOE molds, 311-230-FN 5 cavity GC (BLKOUT). has anyone used this mold with success? with or without gas checks? I have freechex 3 for 30 cal, but do I necessarily need a gas check for subs?
I powder coat my bullets. they will be cast with wheel weights. I am looking for 100 yard accuracy. out past that I will just run away. thanks for your input!

I've not heard good things about the Lee 230gr mold. A lot of people seem to have success with the NOE 311-247 mold. There is a group buy on the NOE forums for the hollowpoint variant.

If that doesn't run soon, I'll just be picking up the standard version of the mold.

I have not heard good things about the Lee 230 grain. It seems the boat tail design is not suited to subs. With subs commonly used in suppressors the preference is for no gas checks to alleviate any issues with possible baffle strikes or the check coming off in the suppressor. Not sure if that is a concern for you though. With powder coating I am having no issues with leading so I am working up some sub loads for the NOE 247 grain for suppressed use. I only wish my mold was a hollow pointed mold.

Get over to the NOE forums and get in on the group buy Boolit_Head! lol http://noebulletmolds.com/smf/index.php/topic,1792.0.html

okay thanks guys. I guess I will disregard the Lee mold. I have been looking around online for awhile and haven't seen any good things about it. besides price.

the guy's fighting with it are mostly running 8 twist barrels.
I'm running a 7 twist bolt gun and have taken the LEE mold down to just about falling out the muzzle speeds.
about 850fps seems to be the low side for it, 900 is a bit better at 100 yds.

for a suppressed AR type rifle I'd go with a 200gr plain base.
I would also powder coat, unless you can clean the can out.

Out of curiosity, why the 200gr boolit for AR-type rifles?

You can run PB with subsonic, but it wont hurt anything to use a gascheck. I have bought PB molds then wished they had a check so they could be driven harder. Ive had the NOE 247gr up to 2500fps in a 300mag.

it's just easier to deal with powder wise and easier to stabilize.

thanks again guys. yes I am going to powder coat them. I have the option to gas check them cheaply, but I don't care for the extra trouble unless I really need it.
I have two 300 bo. a 16 inch yankee hill 1/8 twist, and a radical firearms 10.5 also 1/8 twist.

I have and 8" twist 16" barrel and shoot the Lee 309-230 and it seems to shoot fine in my rifle at around 1000 fps. I think the problem lies in that some of the Lee molds may be to small in diameter. My bullets come out of the mold at about .3095" and I do not size them, just lube with 45-45-10 or LLA. They stabilize and and leave no leading. Maybe I'm just lucky.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a 230gr pb from NOE. I guess if I don't like it then I will have to order another mold.....darn ha ha
