Does anyone have a pedersoli sporting model rolling block rifle in 38-55 out there ? I've been considering getting one because I want a 38-55 single shot and not sure I want to wait for a shiloh or c sharps. How well do they shoot and do the bores run oversized?

Thanks

Pedersoli makes both Sharps and Rollers - why not a Pedersoli Sharps?

My old Pedersoli had .450 - .458+ bore and groove as best I could measure.

I think Pedersoli only makes 38-55s in the Highwall.

I'm currently having a Remington roller rebarreled to 38-55. The one slow point is the extractor either has to be modified or a blank from distant Thunder and fitted. Were shooting for 11lbs on this rifle. Barrel is tapered octagon34" to finish at 30" or so. Blamk is a green mountain 1-12 twist. The pedersolis are impressive rifles for the money. Very good barrels and decent fit and finish. My Sharps made by pedersoli is very accurate. If possible hit a shop that has them in stock and handle a few see what "fits" and feels right. I believe a 40 or 45 cal could be sleeved to 38-55 with few problems other than the extractor issues. One plus is the John Bodine and a couple other models have set triggers also. Few originals do.

Good point and I overlooked that in the first post.
I am not even sure they still catalog one in the highwall?

They used to have both a slow twist (18) rifle and a fast 12 twist .379 or .380 groove rifle.
The latter, if it can be found is the one to own.

Have you considered a C Sharps 75? They usually have quite a few of those in stock, if not in stock it doesn't take them long to turn one out.

Pedersoli still list the 38/55 in Hiwall and 3 models of rolling block! Only the Hiwall has the 1:12" fast twist.

Good. I am glad they are still available.
Beware of short bullets and slow twist for longer shooting.
Do your homework so the rifle meets your needs.

I thought about the Shiloh and the c sharps but I'm also trying to keep the weight down around 10 lbs 6oz cause that's what my Shiloh 45-70 and 40-65 weigh the 75's are nice but weight about 12lbs. I'm only shooting a ram bash at 200 meters. I figured a 38-55 would make the powder and lead last longer.

That's interesting because my CSA 75 only weighed about 10 lbs with the heavy round barrel.
They also do them in octagon, and half round.

I got a Remington rolling block that was converted to a 20 gage shotgun, used the barrel stub and turned down a take off barrel from a 94 Winchester ( it was a 375 Win barrel ) to fit inside. The chamber accepts the newer short 38-55 brass and it's a great shooter, also it appears to have 1-12 twist. In fact , I liked it so much, I made 2.

My C Sharps Highwall with the tapered Octagon barrel weights right around 10 LBs also. Its a 30" McGowen 1-12 barrel. One nice thing with C-Sharps or the other builders is you can specify a weight range, length of pull, trigger and sights and they can build it for you. My Pedersoli 74 long range sharps is closer to 13 1/2 lbs.

Digressing for a moment, using a large heavy boolit with black powder improves burning efficency. My load of 50gns Swiss No2 (Starline 1.125"cases) is very accurate and clean burning, on the range if your sights are aligned when you touch off the single set trigger it will b a "10", boringly accurate. I have used 'light' loads down to a 220gn boolit and the fast twist does not seem to overstabilise these.

I have a C-Sharps 75 with a 26" barrel in 38-55. The twist is 15 and it shoots the Lyman 330gr boolit (scaled down Postel) very accurately out to 600yd. I bought this as a deer rifle with a 26" barrel. Not sure what the weight is but it is no problem to carry. The C-Sharps barrel is .375 and uses the short brass. For me 47Gr of 2F Swiss shoots the 250gr and the 330gr just fine for the relevant task. For hunting Old Eynsford shoots fine. Haven't tried it for the 330gr though.

Aquatance had a Uberti 38-55 and it was at least a 381 bore. Gave him some issues until he worked it out.
