As my daughter and I step into the BP shooting I'd like to cast some conical ammo for us. We have been shooting round balls for now which work very well. Have a 45 juker and another 45. Have my eye on a 445599 mold. Would that work for us? We were unable to find another caliber BP at the gun show this weekend but we will check another this weekend a little bit further away. She's loving the BP's right now.

What twist rate is the rifling in your guns? That will dictate what you can shoot well.

1:48. Not looking for lights out shooting, just plinking as we get this all figured out. Wanting a different Cal to keep interest at a high.

With a 1 in 48 you can shoot balls an conical should be ok. I had really good accurasy with a lee real bullet in my 50 cal. If you still want to shoot round ball to get the mold that does a real and and ball. Sure is fun and did hope you can keep her interested. Just make up some lube and keep them good and lubed up.

I have a TC .45 MOld, for maxi ball slugs, 250 grain. The 1-48 twist shoots these great, 1-66 or so not so much.

The bore should be .454, or there about.
The 445 will be too small without paper patching it out to fit.
I cast a Lyman #454616 Maxi, which is pretty standard for the .45 rifle. These moulds can still be found.

If I were you, I'd be looking for a T/C Maxi-ball or a Lee R.E.A.L. Either should be very good for your purpose.

The conical bullets will weigh more and increase felt recoil if that is an issue.

Thanks. She's a big girl. After she injured her finger I thought maybe she was tougher than her ol' man. I have some looking to do. Have to see if I can find one of those 454616.

You know while its totally up to you to spend a $75 for a mold plus the handle so close to a $100 bill. Why dont you just buy the lee for $20 and see if you even like conicals or your gun does. Sure it will but let me warn you...when you have lubed up boolits you can just shove down your barrel your lead consumption goes up quite a bit. I might have some of those t\c bullets around and kind of think my buddy still has some on his shelf in shop from 30years ago.

1-48 isn't the best twist for the 45 and conicals but it is still doable. Stay away from the longer conicals and go with the shorter ones and they should stablize fine. All said and done though, only shooting will tell.
