Been wanting one of for years not so much a shiloh but a sharps. Up and down on and pedersoli but found this shiloh for a bit more than a new pedersoli. It was it built in 1994 and still have the box and shipping box it was shipped in. So this one cost me 3 of my other guns to purchase this or I could have never afforded such a rifle. She's a 45/70 1874 sharps sporting rifle #1 30" barrel semi fancy walnut wood with a vernier tang sight midrange. Received old owners records on loads bullets powder he used each day he shot it plus 100yd targets he shot with it from 1994 through 2004.
Now it's my turn to start the adventure working up loads and enjoying this old gal. Can't wait to hit the range tomorrow but all I have loaded up are smokeless loads so no blackpowder for now. He shot black and smokeless but we'll see what I end up shooting. Love blackpowder so leaning towards just using it must of the time.
What are some of your guys favorite loads in one of these.....

Youll enjoy the old girl and old technology. Don't try to make it into something its not. I run Black powder in all my rifles of this era type. Simple and easy to work with. Find the charge that in your cases just fills the case to the base of the bullet when seated to overall length with a wad under the bullet. Then work up in 2-3 grain increments to the accuracy level and or velocity desired. ( Most try for 1150--1200 fps)

In my WW cases in 45/70 I can fit 70 grs. of BP drop tubed, a vegy fibre wad, and my 545gr. bullet seated near the lands.

black powder only. also, do consider paper patched bullets, what a gas.

my 45-70 has become a virtual 45-90 with 82 grains of swiss 1-1/2f :)

I have the same rifle with 28 in barrel sans cheek piece and the gun is a bit older than yours but wonderful guns. I shoot BP in mine but would not hesitate to put at least Marlin level smokeless loads in it. With BP, it will kill anything that walks and do it with authority.

That gun is top of my wish list. Congratulations.

Beautiful Rifle!

Question for those "in the know": is the 1874 Sharps action stronger than the Trapdoor? I would think it would be but not really sure. Just wondering if they are safe for Marlin 1895 power loads.

They are stronger but you don't need to feed it anything hotter than the trapdoor loads to have an accurate rifle. All you get is a sore shoulder and for an extra 100 or 200 fps it's not worth it.

Ps with the exception of the sights I have the same model.

Went shooting today....MAN DO I LOVE THIS GUN.... Went out with some 405 gr boolits with 14gr of unique I had loaded up for my trapdoor. I could shot it all day and that's what I'm going to do next trip. I was so surprised at what the unique did and how far it shot. Didn't really do any real accuracy tests except stuff laying around the shooting range. Next time it's paper punching and some real time spent shooting. Plus working on loads...stopped by store and found some 5744 powder so now with 5744 3031 & unique will get a couple loads figured out and then on to the blackpowder. Have some 2f elephant to play with and will use the data the guy before me had written down on his shots from 94 to 2004. The adventure begins....

I have nearly the exact same rifle. The only difference is that mine has a 34" barrel. It was my first Shiloh and I bought it used.

If you switch to black powder, I can recommend a number of bullets it'll like. The Saeco #740 is a good choice, as are most of the Buffalo Arms .459" Money bullets. The one mine likes most is the 459535M4. A match primer and 74gr of Swiss 1.5, and DGL lube and you'll see how well that rifle will really shoot.

Congratulations on the new rifle. Shiloh sure knows how to build them.

Chris.

My competition load was 65grs of Swiss FFG BP, vegetable wad, and a 515gr RN cast boolit. IIRC. Been a few years since I've loaded and shot my Uberti High Wall. My goal is to break it out this Spring and see what it will do at 100yds. I've only ever shot it at BPCR silhouette distances.

The last major match I shot in was the Quigley Match ! One fun Shooting weekend! My down fall is offhand ! the 16 pound cannon & I don't work
well offhand anymore :-( Ol Deuce

I have nearly the same rifle, only the fore end is pewter. Steve Brooks makes the same mold as Paul Jones used to.The Creedmoor bullet shoots very good and worth the price.
