Hi guys does anyone know what the factory barrel twist rate was in the 356W 94? I have heard 1:12" but not had it confirmed.

I would have though that a 1:14" or 1:16" would have been better in a 35 cal especially for someone like me who wants to shot cast. I have seen a few other 35 cals in 1:16" 35 rem, 350 rem mag, 35 whelan, 357 mag etc.

Ideally I think I would got for a 24" 1:14" or maybe 1:16" reasonably heavy barrel so as to limit felt recoil.

I have been considering this barrel

its small whippy nature puts me off a bit, but I could tolerate that if the twist were right, after all it would be a lot cheaper than buying a profiled barrel, buying a reamer and paying for it to be chambered and fitted. Hence my main reason for asking, if however its a carbine barrel with a 1:12" twist it meets neither of my criteria and I would have to probably discount it!

On another note how well do you guys find the factory win 94 barrels shot? None of mine shot well that's why all of them got after market new, better and heavier barrels.

Did I just get unlucky or are they really mediocre barrels compared with what they put on say the model 70?

On the other hand however, if I want to shoot big bullets at moderate velocity the 1:12" could be good!

Hi Andy,
I do have a Win94 AE in the back of the safe; can take it out this weekend & measure the twist rate. I do know that it is a /tackdriver/, but haven't done much w/ boolits through it.

A knowledgeable friend of mine (as crazy for .35's as I), once owned a Marlin 336 in .356Win, and said that those particular rifles didn't do as well for accuracy, and that the Win .356's were better in that regard. I don't know why, but I do think that Winchester really did something right with the .356 AE production run IMO.

Somebody (like Henry) needs to bring the .356 WCF back, even if just a limited run.

The factory twist rate is 1-12" ( http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?235414-Common-Cartridge-Rifle-Twist-Rate-Reference-List ).

Thanks for that, but what would be the best twist rate for 180-250 grain bullets? The list seems to confirm that twist rates for 35 cals are from 1:10 to 1:16 and depend more on manufacturer than cartridge!

Looking at it I think that even with the largest bullets I would probably use at the lowest speed I would probably shoot a 1:14" would be fine, the 1:12 just seems faster than is needed for a 35 cal, as I can't see going down to 800fps!

Unless of course 300+ grains is your thing.
