Thought I'd ask the knowledge base here before trying to find an x-ray tester. I've got some babbit, 4 bars of one, a single of the other that I've not found a reference to.

The lower bar reads American Smelting and Refining Works and is stamped with a number 4

I guess this could be Tin based ASTME#4 or Lead based Hardware #4, any ideas without testing? Tests about 21-22 with my Cabine Tree tester.

The upper bar has had the left side of the name ground off, but whats left reads BE Solo Mold No. with a faint number 5 in the raised panel. This one tests 19 bhn but as you can see the impressions are fairly large.

The tests I'd guess are fairly suspect due to the large cross sections and age. The #4 bar has a higher pitched ring when dropped on concrete.
Anybody want to guess?

Edit to add, the alloy I made up with the #4 in the past would precipitate out a dark blue colored substance when I turned the pot off. If this would be copper I guess that might point to the ASTME #4 since it runs 5-6% copper and the Hardware #4 has none.

The square ones are much harder than plumbers lead. Rings pretty good when you drop it on concrete instead of a thud like soft lead
