Considering purchasing a Henry 45-70
Just got one of their big boy 45 colts and a little unhappy with the short OAL it will handle
So here I am asking what is the longest cartridge length/ bullet weight yours will feed and shoot well
Thanks for all responses

That depends on weather you want to modify it. I have a old custom marlin in 35 Lever power that will go 0.30" over the stock 2.525 or whatever it should be.
I think you can do better than the stock # by a bit of work.

OR, you can blindly follow the SAMMI spec.

They are all just a Marlin 336 as far as I know, except the 450 Marlin which has a different barrel thread. I don't Know what Henry changed but I do Know the barrel on my Henry is much better than I have seen on a Marlin in a long time.

Bearcove I am looking for what the stock Henry 45-70 will feed properly. Hoping it will handle the NOE 460-350 HP without issues
Don't want to modify it. Have 2 Marlins for that

Was really disappointed when I received their 45 colt big boy and found out the max it will feed (without gun or case mods) is a 255 gr bullet
That brings me to these questions
Thanks

It should feed the 350 gr ok. As long as you are crimping in the crimping groove. They handle 405's fine. The best source is to call Henry. Their customer service is tops.

As for the 45 colt, I feel you are asking too much from the old cartridge when using anything over a 250 gr boolit anyway. IMO, it wasn't designed for much more then that to begin with.

When you shoot full power loads with the 45- 70 and 405 gr boolits, I don't think you will want heavier..... for more reasons then just recoil.

Should be fine with that. It is made for the marlin, the Henry is a marlin copy. If the COAL is OK ...

I am shooting the NOE 460-350 flat nose in a Marlin 1895. It is the same length as a factory 350. It will work in the Henry with no issues. You really don't need a hollow point.

Stubert thanks for the response.
As for the hp's. I just like the way they perform on the deer I have shot around here. So far none have taken a single step after being hit.
