I've been shopping around for a .45-70 for a deer gun. My average shot is going to be around 125 yards. Was looking at the Marlins and Henry's, but after talking to those people, seems they think I will have problems with the overall cartridge length (I'm going to have to cut cases back to 1.80" to abide by Michigan Law). At the Shot Show, I was looking at some single shot guns. The CVA Scout with muzzle brake seemed to be about the best deal in my price point. Their quality was way better than some of the other single shots out there. This gun has been out there for a bit. Just wondering what thoughts are of people who have used these guns.

Why not buy a Scout in 44 magnum and not worry about the short case for the 45/70? It will do everything the 45/70 will in Michigan and be a lot easier on the shoulder as well. That is what I did.

Because I already have everything to reload for the .45-70. Cases dies, bullets, etc. I can get 1.80" case length with the .45-70. I bleieve the .44 mag is only about 1.25. Although the average shot is 125 yards, I've had to take shots out to 200 yards. I don't think the .44 mag is up to that. I've used .44 mag on deer and frankly, I haven't been impressed.

Look at Hornady 45/70 brass. It quite a bit shorter than regular 45/70 brass. You may pick up some once fired cheaper since most people don't want it.

Making a shot with a 45-70 at 200 yards requires a shooter that is VERY familiar with the actual drop of the bullet.

Being off 35 - 40 yards in your estimation of range may cost you a deer at that range.

I own a CVA Scout rifle in 30-06. A fine rifle !

I hunt wide open farm fields. I use a range finder. Shoot off a rest. Right now, I'm using a custom built muzzle loader. Make 1 shot kills at 200 yards with it. It weighs about 14 pounds. Looking for something quite a bit lighter as I get older. A 10" gong at 150 yards with my Springfield has been no problem. I think with a modern scope and the proper loads 200 yards shouldn't be a problem.

You might consider buying .44Mag and opening it up to .445SM. Meets your length requirements and beats the maggie. My Handi is equally accurate with either cartridge. GW

Put some money down on the new Henry Single Shot in .45-70. Deal maker for me was the action release and price point. About $70 less through my dealer than the CVA.

Don't know about the new Henry, but the CVA Hunter and Scout V2 are the most accurate out of the box single shot rifles I have owned. Have owned Encore's and Contenders. Still own several Handi rifles, but the triggers and weight of the compact Hunters and Scouts beat them hands down.
