28 inches barrel long enough for 1000 yards shooting

rifle is a winchester 1885 sporter in 4570

would change the front sight

the tang is drilled and tapped for vernier sight

I would consider 28" to be the bare minimum. If you already own this rifle, by all means shoot it. But if you're looking to buy it, I would get something longer.

It will work fine. Also less problem of running out of lube on a hot dry day.

no I haven't bot the rifle yet..
brand new in the box the only thing I don't like about it is that it has a round barrel….. but the price is super good
I if I buy it will put MVA sight on it….
the wood is superb and its case hardened….and the tang is tapped for vernier sight

yes I have read about missing lube on hot day….
is this regular or with the proper lube will stop that
I am not decide yet because many say 34

thanks

For an iron sight gun, you're giving yourself another hurdle to overcome in 1,000 yd. iron sight matches. The longer barrels win more matches, and I'd want every advantage I could get for shooting long range accurately with iron sights.

the more you study this the more I am puzzle

if I don't buy I will go all the way with a shiloh sharp from Montana….

like the Pedersoli also but changing sight and so on I am reluctant here in Canada gunsmith are rare….

you are going to say why not use the Pedersoli sight
well I have heard so much negative comment on them that I would order without sight and install MVA

The barrel length is not an issue with lube, no mater long or short, 26 or 34". On a hot day, shooting BP you will wipe the bore or foul out.

As for a sporter weight 28" shooting LR - good luck. I think the light rifle will hamper your ability to be your best. Long range matches are shot with 60 plus heavy loads. You may not be able to hold and aim accurately while brushing off recoil, while doing the main job, watching conditions so you can put the next shot in the middle, a half mile away.

The rifle you are looking at may be a great starter to learn how to load and shoot. But I would like to see you get off to the right start and stay with it.

If you are serious about shooting LR, not just dreaming, get a minimum 12lb -15 pound rifle.

I am 69 and I shoot my 375 h@H for moose
I must admit the recoil is getting to me
not to long ago I mist a nice shiloh sharp…. on their inventory section for immediate sale
it had a 34 inche barrel
I am all equipe for reloading the 4570….. compression die, wad maker and so on
wheel time will tell
but with all the opinion push forward here I am certain to make a wise decision…..

The 28 inch barrel won't hinder your long range shooting. However a rifle at less than 12 lbs will become unpleasant to shoot from prone by the end of the day, but with the addition of a good recoil pad, and possibly a mercury recoil reducer, the rifle you have in mind would surely get you started.

if I had many years in front of me yes

but at my age no time to loose…. will jump in all the way…..

settled …. will wait for a shiloh sharp to appear on their inventory room to my liking and GOOOOO

the last one I mist because I was not certain was 34 inches heavy barrel…. and was 13 1/2 pounds
just had to call them and say install some MVA sight on it

the only thing that might change my mind is that once it is in my hands…. with our weak dollar, duty a 3000 dollars rifle will hit near 5000 offfffff

Waiting for a Shiloh is a great thing to do, but however that Winchester you have in mind could be rebarreled with a heavier barrel, and get you well on the way. That gives you time to even order a Shiloh after you've got a good feel for the long range games.
