185552So I found some of these at work today in the gaylord box that was brought in along with some Linotype lead. This lead has some string or a wick attached to two sides of it. Anybody have any idea what it is? They are too small to use the analyzing gun on. I could melt some down to a small ingot and check it that way but I was hoping some wise person would know what they are. Thanks Dave

I'd guess they are old lead seals. Should be pure lead.

that would be my thoughts too.
drop one on the floor and hit it with a hammer.
then note the melt temp.
those should give you a small clue as to their composition.

They could be fusible links to melt at a certain temp to activate the Gaylord. Seen a lot of Gaylords in the Navy.

So I figured out today these are 100% pure lead. Still not sure what the wick or string is all about.

It's the string from the bag. I told you those are lead seals. Used to be the treasury used those seals on bags of coins.

When you said seal the first time I was thinking like an oil seal. A money bag seal makes more sense . Maybe they came from a bank?

Lead seals like that with string were also used in industries to Tag OUT controls and switches. So
that they would not be activated while work was being done at another location on the system.
There was a Red Tag on the string for writing time, date, info.
