As genetics go, there is a stream of white tail and muley deer that have them and seem to be a little more successful in breeding as of late compared to their competitors! Nice finds!

the state biologist says they are not teeth and made out of ivory. there are some good pictures showing up of really big ivory tusk, any history behind those pictures?

Johnson1942, the pictures are the result of google search so who knows, photo shopped maybe.

I've seen deer and elk ivory before (you can buy them at Moscow Hide and Fur in Moscow, ID, about two miles from where I sit), and that's nothing like it.

Actually I remembered it wrong. The OP has it correct. I'd that the ivories, or "tusks" were farther back on the skull. I thought wrong. Here's the Moscow Hide & Fur web site, showing a white tailed deer skull for sale, which has ivories;

Sorry for the error. Carry on.

Gotta remember asking, and getting are 2 completely different things!! I'd be willing to bet that little basket rack has been there awhile? But all it takes is that 1 person and the sky is the limit

they are staying on his wall as how often does one ever get a deer with tusks, he may never get another one. a good mount will last a long time, cabela's in rapid city has a full deer mount from the 1870/s and it is in really good shape. looks like it was done yesterday. his are skull mounts and they will last also.
