this isnt the right place for this post but im putting it here as im most comfortable here.matt my 17 year old son did it again. he got a mule deer 5 x 5 last year with a very very rare ivy tusk. the last time this was seen and documented in ne was 1962. well the huge 4 by 5 white tail he got this year with his rifle has a ivory tusk on each side. he breaks his own record. the rack is huge and their they are. a nice ivory tusk on each side. how often is this going to happen in a life time? who knows, maybe tusks are coming back on american deer.

I remember that story last year. If memory serves me correctly it was determined by us non professionals to be a "woolly" mule deer. Now your saying he got a woolly white tail?!?.....that is awesome! Congrats! I want to see pictures.

i will try to get my wife to post pictures. i was up late waiting for him last night to come home from a basketball game. he had stopped by earlier at the taxidermist to see of his european mount was done and it was. when he walked in the house with the rack and a big grin i knew something was up. we never noticed it when we took it to the taxidermist. the taxidermist told him, what is going on over at rushville, two years in a row tusk on a deer. may it is the local water and maybe the water is why im starting to look like a old monkey as im getting up in years now.

We do hundreds of whitetails a year. Maybe only have 3-4 with canines. Small percentage. Most you cant tell till you prep the skull for the bugs to clean. Have noticed it seems to be a geographic thing. In the genetics you could say. Some say they are throw backs from 100's of years ago. Im not sure myself. We get a couple dozen mulies a year. Have never seen one with a canine tooth yet. Also, there are many that have only 1 canine. Far fewer with both of them. An extra neat trophy to be sure. Congrats to the boy sir.

the state biologist said he thinks their is a genitic strain in sheridan co. that carries the tusk gene. when we think deer wander, maybe they dont wander as much as one thinks. he said that deer can stay in a given area for years and years. as far as matthew being lucky or i call it blessed i believe that also. i have noticed that God has blessed him in every thing he does since he has been a little boy who asked me to lead him in the salvation prayer. he was about 4 years old. he then said, i felt that dad. hunting and baseball and of course God and his Son are pretty much his life. he has never went out with a girl yet but i know they text them. when i was his age if i had a chance to go out with a girl or go fishing in a minn. lake which i was close to, the fishing won out every time. there is plenty of time for girls later in life. i'll try to get pictures on this after noon.

no, his are smaller and you can see them below on a picture post. the one you posted in a picture is really a good example to what deer were like 10 000 years ago. that is a awesome picture.

There's a few subspecies of saiga (Russian deer) and Chinese water deer that still have tusks. I can never decide if they look terrifying or just silly

when two white tail bucks or two mule deer buck approach each other during rut one of the things they will do is curl their lips back as if they still have tusk to warn the other. if they had long ones they would rake with them in a fight. im glad they dont have long ones as it might be another animal we would have to worry about besides the bears and mountain lions.
