Old Rusty Mauser Barrels --> Scrap?

Howdy! Did some cleaning in the shop today and found 9 old rusty Mauser barrels and a Winchester Model 270 22LR barrel.

I have no use for them but hate to throw them out if they are good for something. Tomato stakes?

I have picked up barrels like this from gunshops for free, and was able to clean most of them up to make them shootable.
They wee usually taken off to rebarrel a action to a more common caliber than 8mm and nothing more.
Most had fair to good bores, and the exteriors were poor from storage neglect.
They can be reused for shortened to Sporter barrels, and I had a friend that would use the steel to make Muzzle Breaks.
I also drilled a whole thru the chamber and cut them off to make Mandrels to hold actions for polishing and machining.
Tent stakes was the last option that they were used for.

Scope out the interiors, offer shooters for a price, Mandrel quality cheaper and steel tube for less.

Or bundle them and offer bulk pricing

I toss them in the scrap pile and have used them for making all kinds of stuff. They are good steel.

They can also be used to make a fixture to lap in bolt lugs ---
i would like the 22 for relining/rethreading to another project --

I have one that works good for a hydraulic jack handle, wasn't any good for anything else I needed.

The chamber end can be cut off and used for a case gage.

I bought an old rusty M1A1 and the inside of the barrel looked like it was pitted with rust, after an hour of scrubbing it was perfect, no pits! Absolutely perfect. Lots of oil, valve grinding compound, white cloth after white cloth..No scratches or pitting..

Very nice work but how do the edges hold up? Most modern rifle barrels are 4130 or 4140. Some of the older rifle barrels use lesser steels. 4140 has enough carbon for heat treatment but it is widely considered marginal for knife blades.

I made a sledge hammer out of one and a piece of 1-1/4" bar stock. Sort of a baby sledge but often used.

Basic bore cleaning, maybe a day soak in ATF/Kroil, clean again, then bore scope.

You have to know what's really in the bore to answer the value question. Others are correct regarding other inventive and creative uses as well. I would be interested in some of the large ring barrels, depending.

Cut off barrel shanks can the bored out for a hand turned arbor fitted with a diamond disc cutter used to dress the internal locking surfaces to remove setback and equalize the seating of locking lugs. A friend has done this when building long range target rifles on Mauser actions. He called it "Blueprinting".

Nice knives. I use the threaded end(chamber and threads for various projects and I am out of em! I feel like drooling!

It was fairly common for gunsmiths in Australia to cut off the threaded shank of Enfield barrels then bore them out and thread in barrels of smaller calibers such as .22 Hornet or .30-30 Winchester.
I remember seeing an antique .22 centerfire varmint rifle built on a Krag action which had received the same treatment.

With the recent conversions of Mauser actions for pistol cartridges the shanks of these relic barrels might be put to good use.

I need a large ring barrel to make a lap guide to lap bolt face and c-ring let me know and I'll pay a reasonable amount.

Interestingly enough I was re-reading a article in Backwoodsman the other night about building homemade black powder guns from old barrels. So anything with even halfway decent rifling could have the chamber cut off and be made into a small bore black powder plinker if somebody wanted to go to the effort.

I have made BP barrels out of old Mauser barrels.
The Twist in the Barrel rifling is Way Too Fast for loading with BP, unless you scrub the bore betweem Every shot with a bore brush and cleaner.
But I did drill out a few to remove the rifling and used them with sucess without any rifling and patched round balls at ranges up to 75 yards.
