This one has me beat. I was going through some .45-70 brass a clubmember gave me and, lo and behold, came up with these beauties.

Headstamp is 45-70 Government
OAL is 0.211"
Neck ID is approx. 0.320"

Did somebody "Ackley" these cases? Nothing in any of my reference books gives a bullit near that diameter. Maybe it's a .32-70, eh?

I have a bunch of 444 Marlin necked down to 30- and a 309 JDJ contender barrel they shoot very well in. Many of JD Jones' cartridges are based on 444 Marlin or 225 Win. And they all shoot well

Could they be .33 Winchesters, made from .45-70's as mentioned a day or so back, not yet neck expanded?

No, they are .338 JDJs. J D Jones created a lot of wildcat cartridges for the Contender. One of his favorite parent cases was the .444 Marlin, basically a rimmed .30-06. Other calibers he made using this case were .308, 8MM, .338, .358, .375, and .416.

They look like 33 WCF to me.

But, as you said, the JDJs are on the .444 case, and these are headstamped for the .45&70.

Possibly for the old Siamese Mauser? Wasn't it 8MM?

Possibly 8x58R Danish for either the 1889 Danish Krag or 1889 Swedish rolling block.
The cases are made from .45-70 Gov't.

Ackley Improved cases are all of a straighter wall and much sharper shoulder angle.

My reply was aimed specifically at Post #3 wherein he asks about cases with .444 headstamps and .338 necks. I'm seldom that far off base.

my guess would be for the 8mm danish, or he was trying to make 348 win cases and didn't have the expander.
or thought he could make lebel cases and the die wasn't short enough.

Interesting that you should pick that up, because, among the various rifle die sets I got along with the brass, was a 33 Winchester set (which MoodyHoller just bought). Before I ship it out, I think I'll go play in the shop and let you know what I find.

Thanks to all.

Post Script: Yup, 33 Winchester!

I think Yance has it right. It looks like a Siamese Mauser 8x52Rmm Type 66 made from a .45-70.

Maybe the club member was having a little fun. After all look what it has led to. A bunch of old men ( myself included) trying to figure out what the hell is that thing.

On the face of it, I would vote sumbuddy was trying to duplicate the .348 Win, but...............???
