i havent done it yet, but i only have 1 30 cal mold and its my 165 311 RD boolit with the honkin' .253 metplate .277 BC

clearly, the flat nose will make things different at ranges like 200 yards and 300 yards, so im just curious what experiences some of you may have had with " long " range shots with a RD.

i posted this in the hunting section, because ranchdog and hunting go hand n hand, so i figure majority of the ranchdog boolit experts will be here.

fwiw, i havent tried the ranchdog boolits past 100 yards.

I have the same mold and have shot it at 310/309 and 308 with simple lube-Alox and BBL out of my Model 94 and Marlin 1950 waffle top.The marlin has a 2-7 Leupold and the 94 has a Lyman 66a peep site .Chronoed from 1300fps to 2100 and the best I have done is
2-2 1/2 inch @ 100/3-4@150 and 8" on a good day with the Marlin (scoped)and cant get past 100yd with Mod94 (peep) . I will say the Lee 170gr FN shoots better with any load/combo with either gun ,one target with the Marlin was 8 out of 10 under 1'' w/2 fliers 3+5 inch @100yd !

add 5 moa from 100 to 200 and another 5 moa from 2 to 300 at 1900-1950 fps.

can you convert that to inches ? im not 100% familiar with moa yet

1 moa ( minute of angle) equals 1" @ 100 yds. Or 2" at 200 yds and 3" at 300 yds and so on.

A 15" group at 300 yds would be 5 moa.

Technically, 1 MOA is 1.047" @ 100 yds, or 10.47 @ 1K yds.

it roughly works out to 5.25" per hundred [for the 2-300 yd markers] as the drop.
at least where I'm at.
if your seeing 100-f it would be a little less, if your at sea level a little more.
but those numbers would be close enough to get you near the center of the target on your first try.

the 5 moa would be your clicks on your scope not the actual drop.
your 21 clicks [.25" per click] is actually 15" at 300 yds, and around 9-10" drop at 200 yds.
it's probably double that 15" 300yd drop, from 3-400 yds, so you'd increase it to 30 clicks or about 7 moa on the scope.

if you increase the velocity from 1900 up to 2400 your drop will approximately decrease from the 15" at 2-300yds to the same 15" from 1 to 300 yds.
so velocity matters.

That RD is my most recent mould purchase, had it about 5 weeks now. My Win '94 is loving that boolit. It sports a tang sight and globe front sight. So far I've only shot about 75 of these through the rifle, load development, and only out to 200 yds at a steel gong. No misses on the gong, it's an upper torso size sillywhet. It's going to be a fine hunting boolit for sure. I'm going to keep stretching it out as time permits.

Well I guess my Rem 7400 with the Lee 170 gr GC is about 1.2 MOA then with this group at 200 yards! And I have to run these pretty fast 2150 fps to get them to cycle the action. When aI ran a bolt gun shot them at 2000 fps an the were a lot more accurate.

I have no experience with that boolit. I'm sure it will perform just fine at 200-300 yards if you're up to it. However, don't trust the stated BC. Seems too high for me in terms of comparing to my actual measured experience with BC's and cast bullets. Good luck!

IMHO, The above is very good advice, it is common knowledge and very self evident that BC changes a great deal with velocity. A Boolit with a wide Meplat such as the RD will have a wide Low and Lower BC as speed goes up.

IMHO, if you shoot enough of them from 100 to 300 it doesn't matter what the BC is because you will learn how to hold at all ranges to drop one in the boiler room. If your using a scope with a Duplex reticle you already know how to estimate range with it, so have at it and enjoy the fun.
