I have a 24" 1892 that I'm considering trying to get the noise level down as much as possible but as safely as possible without sticking a boolit in the barrel.
I have powder coated Lee 452-255-RF boolits weighing in at 262gr.
Best I can tell Trail Boss might be my best powder option.

IMR's data with a 7 1/4" barrel for a 250gr LRNFP is 4.5gr (606fps) to 5.8gr (727fps).
I'm guessing 5.0gr might be safe with my 262gr boolit, I would expect the velocity to be close to 820fps.

But I'm a little apprehensive as there is no data for a 262gr boolit. When I do the alternate method by volume measuring the case to where the base of the boolit seats and weigh the charge, I'm coming up at 9.2gr.
70% as a starting load would be 6.4gr.

I would appreciate any of your thoughts on this, thanks!

Use the formula that they have and go have some fun.

It should not make ant difference what weight the bullet is,just don't Compress the powder charge.

It makes some fun times.

I took Trail Boss up to the base of the bullet in .45LC with a 454190 bullet in a couple of Ruger new Vaqueros. From memory, it was about 8.2gr without compression. Started at 5.5gr and worked up from there. There were no problems. Best accuracy was a bit lower, about 7.5gr, though.

Thanks guys, this gives me a little more confidence.
I need to remeasure my case for the volume. It was a Starline brass fired from a 454 Alaskan that had not been sized yet.
I did check the OAL length though.

Other than the sound level, what is the purpose of your load, ie target shooting or hunting, plinking, or what ever? My personal feeling is to use a 200 gr. boolit and the 5.0 grs. of trail boss for about 800 fps.

Just trying something on the other end of the spectrum.
Presently I'm using 18.0gr of 2400 with the same boolit and getting 1510fps from it.

I checked my records and the maximum I went to was 8.5gr of Trail Boss, not 8.2gr. I did not check the velocity, however, I have no doubt that your load with 2400 is faster.

I have played with trail boss in a lot of different cartridges and I find when you use a compressed charge the velocity drops. Best accuracy in my testing has been with a 80 - 90 % case full.

Trail Boss is not to be compressed! IMR lists a very specific method for finding the max load and the starting load.

After resizing and trimming that same brass, I ended up with 9.1gr as the max.
I found a few of the same boolits loaded with 8.0gr of Unique that did 700fps from a 2 1/2" barrel. Might as well see what they do till I make up my mind with a Trail Boss charge.
