View Full Version : Making your own mag release spring

I purchased a package of various thickness spring stock from wolf. I found the thickness and strength I need. Being a novice I was able to bend one into shape to test. I fashioned a jig to get several coils (if you can call then that ) I would like to make it properly. What do i need to do to soften the metal to proper coils then harden again.

What kind of spring are you making (coil, torsion ect) and what kind of wire? I've made coil and single and double torsion from music wire. Music wire just needs heated to 500 degrees for an hour to be done. They turn out a nice bright blue that looks nice. There is a little springback so finding the proper sized arbor can require a little trial and error.

Here's a couple pics of some of the spring winding jigs I've made mostly out of scrap. The T shaped drivers have a little nub at the bottom that is undercut so the wire doesn't want to slip off of it. The nub is also just slightly over the height of the thickness of the wire. That way it doesn't want to snag one of the legs as you're passing over it if you're making a torsion type spring. I usually make coil springs on the lathe as they are easy to keep even spacing using the lathe set for threading.

Sorry it took so long to respond. I don't have access to anything other then hand tools. Your T shape looks like something I need. Here are pics of the wire and a pic of the crude spring I made. I am assuming it's a torsion spring? Wire thickness 0.035. Any chance I could get you to make a jig?
Do I heat the wire prior to twisting? Or do I wait until after?

How long are each of the legs, the ID and OD of the coil, and the number of coils? Bend the wire cold as you got it, then once formed stress relive it. I make a little open top box out of several layers of aluminum foil to place the springs in while in the oven.

The ID is 0.21 and the wire is 0.035 so for OD I figure 0.21 + (0.035 × 2) = 0.217.
Oh yeah each leg about 1/2 inch and four coils

What's the diameter of the pin the spring goes around, and at what angle are both legs to each other? If I have any .035" wire I could just make one and send it to you.

0.21 is the pin diameter . I used that ad the ID. I don't know the angle of the legs I loosely mimicked the oem spring.

If you can give me some instructions on how to make the T-handle. I could try to make one.
