This past years buck......tasty little guy. I took a couple antlerless as well for the freezer in 16. All with the 45-70, 430WFN cast of 25-1. No boolits were found. This one was a 90yard shot, broadside behind the front leg. No meat lost but a bit of rib. Buck managed about 30 shakey yards and tipped over. Dead in probably 10 seconds or less.

One of the antlerless as it lay. Lung shot, 80 yard dash.......dead by the time I got there. No lost meat.

Nice September 4 point from a few years back......425grain 50-50 air cooled at 1650fps. I screwed up bad with this one, and hit him through the rear ham, thru the paunch, liver, lungs, and found the boolit wrapped around the offside shoulder knuckle. He traveled about 40 yards and was too sick to get up when I put a coup de grace in his neck. I felt really bad for botching the shot, he deserved better :???:but it was still a quicker, cleaner death than a wolf would have given him. I lost about 3 to 4 pounds of meat.......could have been much worse.

Nice late season 3x4 with the 425. 50-50 air cooled 1650FPS 40 yards. boolit entered neck/shoulder junction, and broke about 8 inches of spine.......found just under hide near offside kidney.

real nice heavy 4x4, also from a few years back. 425grain air cooled ww. 80 yards or so, lung shot. He made it about 25 yards, and dead before I got to him.

And I'll throw in this one of my goat, even though I posted it before, from 2015. 425grain, 50-50air cooled.....about 1700FPS 100 yard shot. Broke both shoulders and exited, didn't fall, hit him again behind the shoulder, didn't fall......took a couple steps and laid down and rolled over. Goats are tough! I couldn't have hit him much harder!

I seem to be missing a bunch of pics......gotta do some searching.
Enjoy.

Nice job on the animals.
Quick question, is that a Darcy's falling block rifle?

Pretty rifle, successful hunt . . .

What more could one ask for in life?

How was the goat's meat?

Also, I see it's a Sharps '75. What a beautiful and finely styled rifle! Love the engraving, too. It all "fits." I'm SO jealous!!!

Bw, definitely not a Sharps 75. It's a cool gun, but not a sharps. I can't say I've seen one like it before.

The goat meat was tough, burger and pot roasts, but the taste is excellent, very mild.

I thought so. I have the plans cut out and a winchester 94 30-30 barrel waiting for it.
Does the round breach block want to spread the receiver at all with the 45-70?
Now I'm thinking about more calibers.
Love the design btw! :-D:Fire:

The receiver walls are connected with a solid rear wall........and the breech block runs top to bottom of the receiver. It would have to shear the top off the 1" heat treated 4140 block to cause a catastrophic failure. I have tested them with HOT loads in the 45-70 and the action never flinched.

I saw someone drew up a cad type program, and the breech block was 90 degrees with the bore. That is a change from the way I designed it. Mine have about a 5 degree angle(like a highwall) so it has some camming effect to seat stubborn cartridges.
The third action(with the octagonal barrel) has a simplified extractor and a coil type mainspring......it is improved over the first 2.

I'm not sure which plans I have. I got them off of another forum.
I am going to just use a 94 winchester fcg that I have sitting around for the easy factor. :-D
Unfortunately I won't be able to get my mill set up before my shoulder surgery at the end of the month so I won't be able to start my project until after that.
Sorry for the thread jack, but I have loved the look and simplicity of your rifle since I first saw it.
I was thinking about picking up a Uberti 1885 in 45-70 but now that I see yours and that it is a strong enough action for it I may well just build my own.
Now to go in search of an octagon 45-70 barrel.

Goat was a 6.5 year old billy 8 5/8 long horns. Solo hunt......that was quite an experience. Very humbling to be alone in the mountains, makes you realize how small you really are.......

Darcy, 1 last question. :-D
What is the width of the receiver?
The guy that inspired me to get the prints and build one used 1 1\4 width 4140 and his is a 30-30.
Does it need to be thicker for the 45-70?
I guess that was 2 questions. [smilie=1:
