My wife has a 50s vintage 336RC that she wants to start shooting (it was her g-ma's), so my question is what is a good mold (lee mold, cant afford others) to use. Most likely will just be plinking or shooting moderate loads. Thanks

My reccomendation would be the RCBS 30-180 as it does very well in mine but, Lee makes 150 and 170 flat point that are useable in tube magazines.

Ranchdog's molds are designed with Marlin rifles in mind and look to be priced very affordable. I've not used one of his molds yet, but they look great on his website, and others who post here always seem to report great results with the Ranchdog boolets. Check out his website before buying. Had I not, over the years, acquired some good Lyman and RCBS molds for the guns I shoot most of my cast boolets with, I think there's a good chance that I would already be using the Ranchdog products already. My next mold (not counting the group buy I'm already in) will likely be one of his products.

If you are just going to be plinking with moderate loads then you might try the Lee C309-113-F better known as the "Soup Can".

I use this boolit in my marlin with 9.8 grs. of Unique a Hornady GC and a win Large pistol primer. It is a first rate load in my rifle and will stay around the 2 inch mark at 100 yards using peep sights and a lyman 17-A front sight. It has very very low recoil........

For a heavy load boolit the Ranch Dog 311-165 is the one I use.I am using it with 33 grs of H-380 and it shoots real well

All of the above are cast with acww........Terry

In the Lee lineup, the C309-150F is hard to beat for an all around plinker/hunting boolit. I load it for several 30/30s I have and it shoots great with 21-22 grs of RL-7 or for a milder load, 11.2 grs of IMR 4756. Use either Winchester or Federal LP primers

For plinking in a 30-30 you can run a plain base bullet and save money on gas checks. Saeco and RCBS make plain base 30's in their Cowboy line of bullets. I've the Saeco 140 gr and RCBS makes a 150 grain. Even with the limit on velocity you're still shooting more power than a 357 mag rifle. Much better trajectory too. Reduced pressure gives more life to your cases and barrel. You can almost shoot the 30-30 for the cost of pistol ammo. So if 1,600fps with a 140 or 150 grain bullet is what you had in mind. My vote is to forgo the gas check.

I know it's not a Lee bullet. However if you add the price of 1K checks to the Lee you can buy the RCBS. It's something to consider.

I'll second the Lee 309-150F. It shoots great in my 30-30s and every other 30 caliber rifle as well.
