Going to start loading for the .45 Colt with 777
I thought I read somewhere when using 777 to use FF for cartridges and not FFF
Anyone with experience with 777 in the 45 Colt ?

FFF works best for me.

you would do much better in your 45 long colt with blackhorn 209 powder.

Before SASS had more chiefs than Indians, I went through thousands of rounds of 45 Colt with FFF and enjoyed EVERY one of them.

From my limited knowledge, fake BP is more corrosive and no better and more expensive. So why bother. Its like diet coke, tastes like xxxx and makes you fat.

Loading Triple 7 in cartridges requires a bit more attention to detail than with traditional "holy black". First Hodgdon only recommends using Triple 7 FFG in cartridges in their loading notes section. They are also rather specific about everything from wad thickness (No more than .030) and compression (no more than .10"). They also specify that cartridges should only be loaded by volume with triple 7.

From what I understand, Triple 7 is more sensitive to compression than holy black. From what I have heard, over compressing it will result in some pretty nasty pressure spikes that can damage more lightly constructed firearms.

Personally, I usually recommend just plan old GOEX black powder if you're not looking to compete at extreme range or accuracy. The substitutes are just a little too finicky for my liking. I've had bad luck with pyrodex as I find that no matter how well I clean the gun, there's always rust the next day.

If you're going to try Triple 7 in cartridges, I'd start with Hodgdon's recommended loadings, and be really cautions in going past them. Just my two cents.

I've been using FFG it works ok but I need to try FFFG to see if I get better accuracy.
