RCBS bench primer issues

Been using my bench primer for several months now priming prob several thousand cases. It started to flip the primers out of the holder and onto the floor or actually placing them from upside down to sideways in the holder. This happening every case and is getting very frustrating. Any suggestions ?

I need a picture, I cant figure outn how an RCBS would flip primers. Bonanza, yes but not RCBS. Their design practitaly eliminates that from happening.

Mine had those fits last month, surprised me. Couldn't find a mechanical reson for it. I cleaned the punch and cup and dry lubed it's shaft then I emptied the primer tube and blew it out with compressed air, looked down the tube...still no answer. I checked the two lever bolts for tightness too.

After putting it back together I operated it slower, with a bit of a pause over the load cycle and still a few got sideways?
Now I'm scratching my head...After looking carefully at the hole where the primer retainer clip goes through I could see a tiny soft burr where the pin scratched the soft aluminum inside wall of the tube...almost non perceptible, more like a tiny gouge.
Ran a wood dowel through and rubbed it good in that area and that was the end of the sideways primers.

They must have been hanging at the safety pin hole and dropping from there when the tube flipped up and banged on the stop and dropped the lodged primer instead of sliding them into the cup like a stack of casino chips...one at a time.

Try loading only one primer in the tube and see if it'll slide from top to bottom without snagging at the clip hole.

Mine does that with the small primers. Put a pc. of regular alum roof flashing between the primer cup rod and the lever. That will raise the pin enough to catch the primer. You could weld it up and grind it back to length but the flashing works fine. Make your piece big enough so you can reposition it occasionally.

Pull out the primer rod and inspect to assure the spring loaded cup is tightly screwed in. A drop of locktight will keep it from loosening again . This was the cause primer to flip out of the cup on my bench primer.

It was this same type problem I had on my Projector press priming station. I don`t have that much hair left to pull out figuring it out so I removed the priming unit and hand prime off press with an old LEE hand prime tool, I don`t miss that station at all now.Robert

I will check for the burr on the tube. I did find that if I push the primer cup slightly toward the lever at the primer drop it will not do this.

Whatever it is , it's something simple enough...that primer tool is about as good as it gets.

Have you changed shell holders since the problem started? I have found some of the non RCBS shell holders are of different thickness and lack a taper on bottom of the hole. This sometimes causes the priming pin and cup to drag or bounce upsetting the primer.

I had a similar problem, my fix may not work for your problem. Mine was flipping some small primers sideways and upside down at times. I noticed that the pivot bolt for the handle was backed WAY out. Looked like it was causing the handle to slide back and forth. Causing the bottom of the primer arm (I guess) to move sideways. I screwed the pivot bolt all the way home and ( I ) haven't had the problem since.

The handle bolt keeps backing out on me too. I make sure it it tightened in before every session. I am seriously thinking about medium strength (blue) thread locker for it.

I will have to try that. For some reason I found that if I rotated the primer tube and got it to a specific location it would stop upsetting the primers also. I did prime about 800 shells last night and towards the last 300 or so it worked fine, imagine that !!

Try inserting some monofilament fishing line in the hole, then threading the bolt in. Much easier to remove the bolt when needed.
